My Cars Update

Just a small update on my cars. The silver bertone auto has gone to car heaven and I have now got two more.

The black coupe i bought last October 2011 with a shade under 35k miles on the clock with full dealer history. Z22SE engine with Auto box. Factory options included cream leather with colour sat-nav and climate control. I retro fitted the shark eye xenons & headlight washer system myself and also added rear parking sensors too. Completely standard except for EGR blanking plate & cheater at the moment. I will probably keep this one fairly standard except for balance shaft delete mod, remove the pre-cat & add my 2.4 inlet with vec-c intake pipes. Ill also do the breather mod to the head so it sucks in less oil into the inlet & change the cam cover breather (poss. catch can). Not washed the car for a week but heres the pics.

The blue Astra convertible i bought from a finance reposession place cheap last week as it had no MOT and had been standing for 7 months. Again Z22SE engine with 114k but Manual gearbox this time. Factory options are leather interior and headlight washer system as well as the usual Bertone extras. I also got the windbreak included in the sale. Replaced the drivers door wing mirror and put her thru an MOT - failed on O/S headlight as it was too cloudy. So put my Depo angel eyes on and went back next day for the retest - Passed.

The car needs a bit of TLC so after xmas its my next project. Heres a few pics.

Shes a bit tatty but she drives fantastic and handles the road well. A good bargain!

Good stuff Paul, both look decent. I do like the convertible coupe.

I've also edited your original post and swapped the full size images for the thumbnails, as there was 12MB of images in the post

It's OK mate, there is no issue with the actual size of them, it's just when there are a few in the same post, it can take a while to load them for people on slower BB connections.

Well I swapped over my insurance to the blue convertible on the 31st dec but couldnt get tax until the 2nd Jan. On the way back from getting my tax I had a lady change lanes unexpectedly and gave me a few scrapes down the passenger side.

UNLUCKY? hmmm maybe not because as luck would have it i needed to touch up the bumpstrips anyway so now ill get it done free as the bumpstrip has been damaged. So whilst its at the bodyshop im having the drivers side bumpstrips & door touched up and im also going to have my irmscher bumper & headlight waser jets sprayed the same colour & fitted. £400 for the extra work all in including treating the small rust patch on the passenger door and painted. Ill post some pictures when its done :)

In the meantime ive swapped the steering wheel for a turbo one with silver bottom section. Ive also added a centre console with the sat-nav screen cutout and added a 5" screen device from china that does sat-nav, bluetooth, hands-free car phone and a few other gimmicks powered by windows CE 6. Result is I can control my phone via bluetooth & it plays music from my phone thru the FM link onto my standard stereo. Im going to get the console colour coded the same as the rest later on, im just testing how practical it is at the moment. I just need to extend & better locate the mic so people can hear me better during a call, and hardwire the sound output instead of using the FM link (which is not that bad at all tbh - but not the best). I had to solder in a switch on a fly lead and mounted that onto the underneath of the console with just the little black plastic bit sticking thru. I used a reset button switch from an old pc case i had lying about.

Next is to make up a roof & window switch holder with integrated MFD.

Heres a few pics of progress.

Also I had to change the pollen filter as the car was condensating badly on the inside. Heres pics of old and new filter. I was shocked too!

The old filter could also be one of the more expensive "active carbon" ones, which is why it looks really bad

It could be but i couldnt be bothered to look closer. Just wanted to sort out the condensation as it was getting quite bad.

On another note today I ditched my EGR valve and fitted the blanking plate & cheater i bought from the shop. I kept getting the EML light every now and then, so plugged in my OPCOM and it had a few EGR error codes. Ran an EGR valve test from the OPCOM functions whilst engine was running and it seems my EGR valve was stuck in the shut position! Running the test should have made the engine stall but revs stayed the same (not 1 little dip) and was getting a reading of 1.01.

EML code was P0404 - EGR Valve open position - Not present (In other words stuck shut)

Also cleaned out the throttle body today. After removing the intake pipe it didnt look bad at all, but when i removed the TB and turned it over it was as black as the ace of spades. So out came the diesel & cillit bang to sort that mess out. Refitted and gave her a whirl so just gonna give the ECU time to re-learn throttle positions, o2 map etc. The dirty TB had a calculated throttle position reading of 21% open on idle when engine was upto temp!

Cleaned TB now has a calculated throttle position of 7% at idle - what a difference a bit of dried oil can do!!!

Right todays job was to remove the old and attach the new (ish) rear quarter panel trim on both sides. As always theres a hiccup thou. The stealers ordered 8 new clips for me and i did get 8 bags, but 1 of the bags hadnt sealed properly and the clip was missing! Typical I didnt notice till i got home thou.

So today I got the nearside done......
DSC_0085.jpgDSC_0086.jpgDSC_0088.jpgDSC_0089.jpgDSC_0090.jpgDSC_0091.jpgDSC_0092.jpgDSC_0093.jpgDSC_0094.jpgDSC_0095.jpgDSC_0096.jpgDSC_0097.jpg

As you can see from the pics it becomes obvious why this trim pops itself away from the panel. But job done and friday ill pick up the last clip for the offside piece.

Tomorrow ill be taking the car to college to swap out the door as it has a fairly large rust patch on. I managed to get another door in immaculate condition from a chap in southampton. I've also got a set of these to put on......

Irmscher mirrors.JPG

While ive got the chance im also going to give the car a service and have a good peek underside. Got all the parts today; Gm plugs, oil filter & oil and fuel filter. Busy days ahead......

im glad you posted the above
i bought new clips before crimbo as one of my trims was coming away at the door side i did find that it was all furred up making it hard to get the new clip in and just pushed it back in
they want £45 for a new trim in primer
i,ll be taking mine off again to retry in the above manner :)

Yeah give that a try but ive noticed on 1 of my pieces it was too badly corroded so now its only fit for the bin unless it gets bonded on.

On another note ive got my door and mirrors on now so quite pleased. Car could do with a good valet mop etc but for now at least it looks better.

Just a quick update before I have to do some errands. The plenum is fitted!!!

Heres a few pics so far.......still lots to tidy up but its on, working & sounding niceeeee!

DSC_0212.jpgDSC_0214.jpgDSC_0216.jpgDSC_0218.jpg

Whilst removing the fuel intake line I noticed I had a massive build up of pressure even after I had depressed the relief valve. I had previously noticed that injector 4 had a very slight leak a couple of days ago but assumed the seal was work, but i now know why. It seems the FPR was not opening much for the fuel return.

So problem solved by putting 1 of my spare fuel rails with a known good FPR back in. Also added some cleaner looking injectors.

I also had to extend some connections on my wiring loom for the TB, Map & air intake sensor. I did have a previously made up loon from my bertone coupe but when i connected that it would not start. After i pulled back the protective sheaths I found the wiring slightly different. So even If you have 2 bertone cars almost identical it seems the wiring looms are quite unique to the donor car.

P.S. The Thermal Insulating Gasket is doing a fantastic job! Almost NO heat soak from engine to plenum! Engine upto temp and plenum still cold (after a drive) to very luke warm after several minutes standing still. Im just getting a little heat soak from the water pipe on the left so ill have to find a solution for that.
