Jason's 02 Astra Sri Project

So as some of you who have read my ‘Introduction’ thread may know i am currently working on a late 2002 Astra SRI that had a really bad smoking problem (oil ring).
I picked the car up for 2200 Australian dollars knowing that the engine had this problem, seeing a bargain and an excuse to start another project i purchased the car.
The car itself is very clean and very tidy with the only issue (other than the motor) is the driver’s seat had a small rip in it (another project for me later down the line) but for now im doing a engine rebuild. New rings,bearings,gaskets/seals,balance-shaft delete etc.
So a couple of days ago i started to pull out the air box, battery and other small things but with a 3day heat wave (over 45degreese C) the most i got done was the small stuff and the CV shafts.
But since it has cooled down a lot today i finally got the engine out and on an engine stand where i will leave pulling out the looms, manifolds and hopefully get to removing the head by the end of tomorrow.

Over the next few weeks i will be updating the status of this engine build. If anyone has any comments or suggestions and tips please feel free. But for now, some photos!

Cheers, Jason

still waiting for some things to come in like the new bearings and other small stuff.

Still waiting for the bearings to come in but got some more done today,

Just a question to those who have removed the balance shafts. have you noticed any difference in your engine? does it run rougher?
i know that most of you have new cams and all that in your engines but mine is all stock. would there be much difference in how it runs? and does anyone have a video of before and after the balance shaft delete?

but anyways some more pictures, got the head, sump, timing chain cover all off.19315_10151260466018432_465383827_n.jpg73349_10151260465108432_86472153_n.jpg14746_10151260464078432_1851176658_n.jpg

Also received my new grill as i had to cut my old one out to get the bonnet to open. i must say i like it with out the badge!

So got to pull the pistons out today. must say i have never seen one so dirty... let alone all 4!!299588_10151262149828432_821332139_n.jpg163352_10151261952198432_1390150008_n.jpg

I dont know much about this engine but are the oil control rings meant to be almost flush like that?? the engines i have worked on they have always been loose like the compression rings? all four pistons were like this and in such a poor condition, anyone have any ideas as to how this could happen?

Edit: the piston compression rings were moved like that by me and were not inserted with a clear open gap.

well after alot of work and scrubbing i got them to a much cleaner status!

Hey just a question for anyone who would know, can i re-use the bolts that hold the two half's of the bottom end together? or do i have to replace them?

Cheers, Jason

i think its mainly a must change of the head bolts because there stretch bolts
i think the sump bolts are reusable
