As above the old dear's got a dell dimention 3100 its about 5 years old and only a couple of months ago i upgraded the ram to 1gb from 256mb :wtf:

Its been running fine and alot quicker than it used to.

But this morning when she turned it on a screen came up saying windows did not start succesfully and to chose the following options:

Safe mode

Safe mode with networking

safe mode with comand prompt

last known good configuration

Or start window normaly.

Ive tryed every one of those and keep getting the same screen.

I get a blue screen saying a problem has been detected and windows has had to be shut down to prevent damage.

Also says UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME

And to check any harware or software recently installed.

Any ideas anyone??

Ive even had it apart to make sure nothing is loose or funny and even put the old ram back in it to eliminate that.

Any help is greatly apriciated (y)

hard drive partition is corrupted or hard drive failure

also suggest taking out the extra bit of ram and trying to boot

if not then it might be a operating system rebuild or fresh install

i am watching blues v villa on tv so cant help much

If the above process fails to restore the system then in the number#5 step use fixboot command instead of the chkdsk /r command.

Turns out it was the hard drive mike. I tested it in the set up and a load of error codes came up :(

So for now ive taken the 500gb from mine and put it in the dell then rebooted with 7 and everything seems fine with it :)

Iv got a caddy to use internal h/d's as external so just need a couple of adaptors then i can see whats still on the originaly hard drive.

Do hard drive just fail like that then?

Hopefully it wont be something nasty like a virus and ill still recover some of it

Thanks for the help (y)

There all good until they go wrong :)

could be heat related as it is warming up now

any hard drives on their last legs dont react well to heat
