CTS Fault - NO EML - Pls Read !

right last night i spoke to loads of people, some even gave me links to how the timing and ignition work on the z22se engine, something to do with compression based ignition

i was starting to s**t it as i thought it might be a cylinder running on low compression

however i thought it cant be as it is intermittent, cant be ignition as plugs & coil pack replaced, injectors were recons from last summer, so i thought how about the cts [coolant temp sensor], i spoke to another bloke who said that the reason why the build of condensation in the oil is due to the engine not warming up sufficiently, surely if it was a lean fuel mixture then the engine would heat up quick, so then i spoke to vocky about how the engine would run better without the fpr mod meaning less fuel pressure would help but not cure my problems, i then thought well if it fuel related and it was eating up too much fuel then only the thing i could think about would be the cts as this controls the ignition and fuelling based on engine temperature, ie less fuel when warm and more when cold to help start and warm up, i came to the conclusion that the engine would run kinda well when cold but would start to run rough when hitting about 80c, i.e. lack of power when accelerating, hesitant and random misfire, the misfire would be basically appear after hammering and would sort itself out when left to idle.

So about 11pm last night i got off my pc and thought f**k it, i took off the the connector for the cts, it started to hunt and the fan kicked in, but ignored it and took it out for a spin, now as the cts also controls the temp gauge on the dash i had no idea how warm the engine was, also the fans was running constant, that didn't concern me, I was more concerned about how it would idle using a referenced temperature from the ecu for the cts as it was unplugged, now the car ran a hell of a lot smoother also the hesitancy was not apparent and it would rev more freely to redline, also the misfire was gone after a heavy foot.

I couldn't believe I was getting somewhere as i know the c20xe and x20xev along with other ecotec engines suffer from cts problems as they seem to be the most important sensor in terms of how other sensors run, ie egr, tps, maf, igntion coils, injectors, i didn't expect the z22se engines to be also heavily reliant on the cts concerning how well an engine runs

Now I was not getting an eml light except a f**king random misfire code occasionally which was no f**king help

here is the photo of the old cts

btw this part costs 10 quid and it is really really worth it if your experiencing, rough idle, poor mpg, power loss, hesitancy and intermittent misfire

replaced mine tonight and just done 100 miles on the motorway, idle is smooth as f**k, acceleration is like the day i bought it and what's best is that she sounds lovely when idle and i get f**king 40 mpg on the motorway

all i am going to say is vxhall are complete cunts for charging 100 quid for a diagnostics test to replace a 10 quid sensor cos the ecu is not programmed to be sensitive enough to pick incorrect resistance values,

thse problems were apparent in the early 90's on vauxhalls when electric management ignition came in and 15 yrs later they are using it as away of getting easy money

also if your suffering condensation build up and your is struggling to idle at 80 c or above then replace this as mine is static at 82c, the temp where the stat opens

thanks guyz

i needed a pick me up with my job going next week

i thought i was going to have to start spending

i aint cancelling my vxhall diagnostics on friday until that morning just in case it might reappear but in the likely hood it wont then i will ring up and tell em wot i think of em

i might even give my friend who works for warranty analysis in luton a bell and give him a hard time :p

i am really p**sed off but very happy, kinda like hyped up man

When I connect an obd scanner to my car which can show the engine's coolant temperature and the data is plausible, can I assume, that this sensor is working well?

Yes, but the OBD scanner purchases the data from the ecu, doesn't it?

it uses the resistor for the temp gauge

the other resistor is only checkable with the volt meter hooked up to it with voltage going into it and checking resistance based on temps, the ecu has no way of verifying the coolant temps other than the cts, the eml will come on if the resistance is shot and it is out of range, so even if it isnt accurate the eml wont come on, say the engine is cold according to cts but infact the engine is warm, this would cause the ecu to pump more fuel in same as the air temp sensors when u can get a cheat resistor that tells the ecu the air temp being drawn into the engine is like 5C when infact it is 30 causing increased fueling

I will try this I have been having a similar problem. Mine started running rough after gunning it then steadily got worse, I have a scangauge fitted and was finding it telling me the temp was dropping below 70 C . the car was Ok when cold it moved onto a 1514 and 1612 error although and finally packed in. I will check the Tb but also order a sensor as well , any chance of a part number, am at work cheers..

Looks like this might have been my problem aswell, fitted a new CTS and all is fine, funny (or not) how something so small can screw an engine up

could this problem/symptoms look similar to the symptoms with the egr?
as it sounds similar to what the ex has been experiencing
but she's not long had the egr replaced notsure.gif

well the CTS controls the timing / fueling of the engine based on coolant temps

symptoms include random cut outs, poor idling, hunting, over fueling so yes similar to EGR valve
