Dropped the car off this morning. Just got back now.

Will update later when they call me to let me know what they find once the box is stripped down.

6th gear has scoring on it, the bearings are shot. It's having a new 6th gear fitted, along with a full bearing set fitted.

might be worth investing in an extended warranty with vauxhall
Not much point on a 7 year old car. In repairs in the last 3.5 years it's cost me £500 for the suspension to be fixed 18 months ago, and then what every it ends up costing for the gear box.

ah that old chestnut. What is it that makes the gearbox so weak on the VXR?
It just sounds odd that it's 6th gear that has succumbed to the stresses and strains. Logically you would think it would be any of the first 3 gears due to the bursts of acceleration.
6th is just a cruiser so less stress on the cog.

aint the all spinning all the time just the selector engages each gear with the out put shaft
looking on google it seams the outter is the main one to go
i dont know much about gearboxes but ive had one pop in the past(not a vx) and know they cost a bit to fix

I've just got back from picking the car up. It's like a totally different car.

The movement in the gear stick I had in 1st and 2nd has gone, and it's a lot smoother going into gear.

My wallet is now £1k lighter. They showed me some of the old bearings, and they are also sending me some pictures what they took that show the pitting and the wear to the bearings. In one of the pictures, you can also see where some of the teeth on 5th have been worn away on the edge!

They sent them to me via e-mail from their iphone while I was there, but they haven't come through. If they don't come through today, I'll phone them on Monday and see if they can re-send them to me

Them bearings are well shot matt.

Did you have any clunking up thru the floor when taking up the drive ?.. as mine has, but i have no movement in the stick so i presume my bearing are ok... will have to take it to bits at some point i think..

No Daz, there was no clunking when lifting the clutch up. I had gear stick movement in 1st and 2nd (but only when initially letting the clutch out.....I actually messaged vocky about that back in July!), and I've had a faint whine for well over a year now thinking back. It's only really manifested itself over the last 3 weeks, to the point it was at yesterday.

surely vauxhall should make a contribution to the cost of repair even though its not a new car?? as this is a common fault with these boxes which they know about? i work for a main dealer in the agricultural world and they recall old high hour machines and pay part of full cost of repairs dependant on age or hours.
