A20NFT Astra J vxr engine

I purchased a used A20NFT Astra J VXR engine the other week, not really sure what the final spec will be, probably just a few mild tweaks.

It is based on the GM L850 engine family just like the z22se, z22yh, LE5, L61 and B207

it has the upgraded block with extra castings

So a few pictures

Obviously the first thing to do is strip it

Just in case you missed the problem with this engine .....

The piston number 3 has a chunk of ringland missing, I suspect it went out past the turbo

I have since whipped out the damaged piston and it is cracked from top to bottom, however there is zero bore damage so it is an easy and cheap fix

Will get some more photos later

vocky any chance that filler cap fits a z22se or a z20net?

yes it does, however it is taller as it was designed to be used with an engine cover.

Any oil jets under there ?

yes it has the under piston oil jets

the replacement piston and head gasket set arrived today

I will replace all the piston rings with genuine parts, do the balancer delete, strip the head and replace the valve stem oil seals

tofferson may be interested in the block if you didn't want to build it all back up. U could do the work on the head n sell the head separately maybe.

So I replaced the duff piston and rebuilt the bottom end

sump cleaned out

bottom end done and the bores are like new

What are the plans for the engine?

I have fully stripped the cylinder head

Inlet ports have a terrible sharp corner

lots of parts

I have already cleaned up the valves in my lathe, they are all good

I gave the cracked piston a small tap and it fell in half

This engine was not far from total failure

This is the OEM piston fitted by the factory to this A20NFT engine, just in case you thought it is not standard

Well there has been a slight change in direction for this engine

The bottom end has now been sold, quite surprised how many people wanted to buy it

So this thread will continue with porting the cylinder head

whats caused that damage? poor mapping?
swindon race engines run these stock for btcc at 360bhp with no internal mods for 2 seasons
