Modify Bonnet Catch Astra G

Parts Required:
Drill
5mm Metal Drill Bit
Stanley Knife
Hacksaw (Optional)

Reason for Modification:
Fitting an aftermarket Grill will often leave the bonnet release catch sitting proud of the grill when the bonnet is closed.
This easy modification will move the catch backwards on the release mechanism, so that it now sits flush with the grill when the bonnet is closed.

Time Required:
About 20 minutes (took me 30 taking photos)

Step 1:
Open the bonnet. Once you have the bonnet open, you will see the release mechanism behind the grill.

The first thing you need to do, with a small screwdriver, remove the washer/clip which is holding the catch to the mechanism. This can be seen in the above picture.
Once this is off, you will be able to remove the plastic bolt which holds the catch in place. This simply slides out. DONT LOOSE EITHER THE CLIP OR THE PLASTIC BOLT.

Step 2 (Optional):
Depending on what grill you have, you may want to remove one edge of the catch, to allow it to sit flush with the edge of a slat on the grill.

Step 3:
Now, on the catch, there is a plastic spring, which you will need to remove to enable the catch to set further back. This can be easily removed with a sharp Stanley Knife

Step 4:
Now comes to time to see where you need to drill the new hole. The easiest way is to place the catch back through the grill, and adjust it so that it is now sat flush with the grill. Then, where the whole is, that is where you need to drill.
The plastic bolt is 5mm, you will require the 5mm metal drill bit. It will be easier if you drill a pilot hole first.

In the above picture, you will also notice the 2 plastic nobbles, remove these with either sand paper, or CAREFULLY slice them off with a Stanley Knife.

Step 5:
Re-fit the catch, and make sure it’s fitting nicely.

NB: As you can see above, I actually didn’t align mine properly when I drilled the first hole, so needed to drill a second one.....OOPS
And that’s it.....job done.
