Pathetic throttle response - Causes & solutions

This ridiculous (and dangerous) 'throttle lag':

... seems to be caused by the slooooow rotational speed of the throttle blade below ~3000 rpm:

Apparently the joke is deliberate and supposed to be a 'feature' of the 'throttle-by-wire' crap
asmileys.on_my_web.com_repository_Unhappy_brick_wall_017.gif
. Like Windows 10, embrace progress to run backwards.

That's unbearable and makes the car undriveable. Furthermore, sabotaging the VX220 / Speedsters with this prank should be regarded as a crime against humanity.

Looks like our american cousins were similarly 'blessed' on their L61 version of the engine. But this guy managed to solve it

So we just need to change some frigging numbers in the ECU throttle table.

How could we do this?

What do we need in terms of software and hardware?

there is next to nothing available for the standard z22se ECU, getting the Dutch software from Peter is really the only option

as of a few year back you could get a app plugin device that made the throttle response better but not sure if its suited to the z22se ecu
like this

You are referring to this, ain't you?: ObdTuner

"... With OBD tuner it is possible to turn the Z22SE Engine Control Unit (ECU) into a free programmable ECU ..."

"... you only need a laptop/PC running Windows (XP/ Vista/ Windows7) and a low cost OBD interface ..."

^ On first impression sounds like heaven to me!

Downloading and scrutinizing it ASAP.

^ Those gadgets just boost the voltage signal from the throttle pedal potentiometer/s, to trick the ECU into thinking that you're depressing the pedal more than what you're actually doing. Then they charge you a couple hundred for what really costs about the same in materials as the EGR cheater (a few quids at most).

Problem is the OEM throttle table in the Z22SE ECU doesn't give a f**k about how briskly we plant our right foot, and just slowly opens throttle plate at its leisure pace, ignoring pedal signal (boosted or not)
asmileys.on_my_web.com_repository_Unhappy_cursing_002.gif
. My bet is that this renders "pedal overclocking" useless and that none of these gadgets really works on the Z22SE.

yes ""app"" accelerator pedal position :) i guess you could make something from and lm317
mines not slow on the factory z22se ecu not like in that vid

I solved the 'dead spot' in my throttle pedal by adjusting its play.

1) Make sure contact is OFF.

2) Completely unscrew 'A', then just loose (not remove) '1' to '4'.

3) Now rotate/pivot the whole plastic cover towards the bulkhead (front of car) to get rid of the dead spot.

4) Tighten screws '1' to '4', and screw 'A'.

5) Enjoy real throttle response.

Provided enough amounts of swearing, this can be done with the throttle pedal in position and plugged.

Good bit of info, might try it on the daily first. Have noticed that the astra electronic pedal was a lot slower to respond than my older cable throttle bodies

I tried it, just made it rev higher and it began 'hunting'. ended up putting it back to normal. was a twat to do on the car though! maybe I did ut wrong though

Use a DTUK PedalBox. Three adjustable throttle maps. Plugs straight to the pedal. Far less intrusive and takes seconds to fit. Had them on all of my cars for the last few years. Need to get one on my G

I had the same response as you just higher revs.. My 2.2 direct has gone real crap on throtle response just seems to have no "GO" in it anymore.

I have never found any problems with throttle response on the z22se, been running 1 for 17 years now.
not as snappy as a cable throttle and never will be especially on shut down times.
Best advise i was given by a main dealer and another tuning company at the start of my z22se journey was to only use 99 octane fuel, cost more per litre but gives better mpg's and still works out slightly better £/mile. the car just seems happier on that over regular fuel.

I adjusted mine today and actually it worked. I had about 5mm "dead spot" in the pedal, ended up adjusting it and got it just right.

The vast majority of these "plug and play" do nothing.
Tried and tested mods such as Balancer shaft removal, lightened flywheels, fully lightened and balanced bottom ends, better inlet and exhausts all do improve throttle response but cost more.
In short there is no "quick fix" if the car is set up as manufacture has intended or a custom remap has proved then that's as good as you will get.
