ill engine :(

Hi, I've been a member of this forum for some time but not sure if I've posted on here yet...

I've got a 2001 vectra sri and just recently its developed a problem. I noticed the other day while accelerating on the motorway that the engine won't rev past about 5000 rpm. I tried several times (even in neutral) and it feels as though it's hitting the limiter (but it's obviously not). Other than that it drives and feels fine.

Any ideas what this could be? I changed the sparkplugs today but that didnt help anything 🙁

a strange one that, could be worth getting the ecu codes read, there maybe an error code stored.

the engine light did come on for about 30 seconds one time after i kept the revs there for a short while. obviously its not something i want to make a habit of cos it cant be too good for the car.

I heard a rumour that theres a trick you can do by pressing the brake and accelerator when the engines off to get error codes... it didnt work for me though lol. dont happen to know if its true do you?

usually a car is in limp mode when it wont rev over 5k, it stops the engine from damaging itself as the ecu uses the emergency map as a result of major sensor failure

could well be the crank sensor

there aint many sensors on this engine so it is a case of plugging into a diagnostics kit either way

a tech 2 reader is required to read the codes, there is no other way.

thanks for the replies guys. I got someone coming out tomorrow to change the timing chain (which is something i wanted to get done anyway) so I will go from there...
