2.2 astra sri problems

Hi people any help here would be great

Ok i recently had my cam chain done and when i went to pick it up they couldnt start it so i came back next day and they said they couldnt get the oil pressure up. So they showed me the old parts and said they put new plugs in for me aswell but the car is running lumpy give it a week and all should be fine so i did and the car was still lumpy so i took it back and they said it could be the timeing and he later phoned me and said its half a tooth out. so i picked the car up and it was fine started fist time felt smooth only to find out the next day on the motorway it had no power i struggled to 70mph so i took it back today and they said it could be the throttle body so ive just picked it up AGAIN! and the power is back but its lumpy again i have to step on the accelerator to get it started and keep revving it to keep her alive or it dies on me. Also when it is ticking over its hunting quite bad and the lights go dim then bright

So My questions are What plugs do these cars need?
what is the real fault with the car?
and what could they have damaged in the process of doing my cam chain?

it does sound like the cam timing is wrong, get them to correct it or make them pay a garage who can time it correctly.

ps: it's the easiest engine I know to time up !

they said the timeing is spot on is there anything else it could be before i point the finger? cheers vocky.

I need some background, why was the chain changed, how was the car running previously, has anything else been done ?

poor tickover is either cam timing or a bad air leak

I would have a good look around in that engine bay and see firstly if they've left something disconnected , like Maf sensor connector etc, you never know!!

the car was running mint before it went in apart from the noisy chain and the only thing that was done was the airbox de-restricted. now ive just been back and he put it on tech 2 and it came up no faults which is weird because previouse to me speaking to him he said that the throttle body was showing faults.

no fault codes and bad running could be the coil pack, but usually it mis-fires when duff rather than stalls

mind you bad cam timing also throws no codes....

he showed me somethin on the tech 2 and said if the timein was out it would show on here but everythin was sound he then said to get a second hand throttle body but that might not work or he might not be able to program it into the ecu.

is there anythin else that could cause this prob like spark plugs ect cheers pal

the throttle body is not programmed, it's a simple plug and play job.

might be worth trying another coilpack, try and borrow one if you can or get the garage to get one on a return basis.

It's also worth getting them to check the ecu plugs and throttle body plug, it's possible there is a bad connection causing the problem.

is this somethin i can do i mean i am an electrician lol i know auto and sparky are two different things but i could have a bash all i would need is a picture of the 2.2 engine bay and some arrows to all the sensors , plugs ect lol i know i sound a cheeky git but i do need this sorting and ive been back to that garage so many times. any hows ill try ebay for a coil pack does the 2.2 have the same as other sri or is it not the same as any other model? thanks vocky for your time. :thumbup:

sounds like crank sensor to me

put your ignition on and test each sensor connector for volts

most ecus have 12v outputs as standard

the coolant temp sensors usually play up when your engine is warm and it starts to hunt at idle and cut out when coasting, misfiring occurs due to over fueling

symptoms are the same as the crank sensor but with crank sensor the engine will struggle to start up then it will run rough at idle as if it is missing

go get yaself a haynes manual for the vx220, ther manual has a lot more on the 2.2 engine rather than the vectra manual

as for crank sensors they are located where the crankshaft has a specific pulley with teeth on it, it works the same as the abs sensors where it picks up on the teeth on the hub spinning round and round

they are usually located bottom of the engine near chain or belt - the ecotec and redtop engine has the cranksensor located below the power steering pump on the block above the sump at the front of the engine

get a torch and get under the car and have a look at the block near the alternator - might be there

the ecu plugs are circled in red, the tb plug in blue

make sure the battery is disconnected before removing them

I've not got a pic of the crank sensor, but it sits behind the starter motor and is a git to access 🙁

is the crank sensor visible so i can check its plugged in or would the car not run if it was un-plugged? cheers for the pic vocky.

yes it is- looks like any other sensor

infact it looks like a big abs sensor

i would unplug and c if your car starts

best trick to check whether a sensor is faulty is to start her up then unplug the sensor and see if she still runs, if so any different

for the ecu light to come on the snesor has to be faulty for a certain amount of time, then for it to be stored it also has to faulty for a certain amount of time

just cos your ecu light doesnt come on doesnt mean any sensors are fubar - lambdas often fail and the ecu light wont appear
