Interesteing valve spring info

Doesn't look good for most of the available valve spring options.....

Although the argument is probably only relevant if it really isn't a good idea to be machining the head to make them fit.

One guy also casts some doubt on the merits of fitting CompCams with standard springs dunno..

I did read that thread and it certainly made me open my eyes !

I agree with what they are saying, the double valve springs are really the wrong size for the ecotec 2.2 / z22se, so the head has to be machined or they will coil bind.

my saab head will be getting machined in a few weeks or so

The needed machining is far from being difficult

EDIT : Ok, read this Jbody topic and all is true there.
Same could be said for the Schrick stuff, I heard many tuners are not following the installed height specs and not doing the full machining when they fit it.
Schrick springs needs two things being done :

Increase the head diameter where the spring seat is (otherwise the clearance is two close between the coils and the head)
Get the expected installed height by removing a few 1/10th of mm on each of the lower retainers which is the part many get bad...

the valve spring seat needs to be cut 1.5mm deeper into the head !

I will have them cut 1mm as I'm not going crazy on valve lift, well only 11.58mm 🙂

So do you think "protomec" comment on page 3 about there not an awful lot of material to be machining away has any validity?

I will trial fit the new valve springs, measure the installed height and then check for coil bind at the cams maximum lift.

then I will decide what needs doing, but I won't be machining any more than is needed, hopefully zero - as thats cheapest :lol:

You don't need to machine the head to get higher installed height, only the lower retainers
