2001 Vectra B 2.2... Buying Help

Hi,

First post so hello to everyone!! I'm looking at a Vectra 2001 2.2 tomorrow - its on 80k with a full service history... I'm not a n00b when it comes to mechanics (having maintained the X30XE on the Omega, X25XE on a Vectra B and X20XE on another Vectra).

I've spoke to Vx Customer services about any recalls/reworks and they confirm there is nothing however the VIN number falls in the range as displayed by the Field Remedy in the TIS.

I'm really after some help on what to look for/test/listen for in regards to the engine (and most importantly, the timing chain). Dont want to buy it then have the chain snap a few days after.

all the vectra B's were built before the revised chain kit was introduced, so if it hasn't been changed it will need changing

so unless they have a receipt for the work factor the cost into the purchase price

usually a duff chain will rattle when the engine is stone cold, there should not be any rattles whatsoever from the engine

also worth listening to the engine at approx 2500 rpm, this will tell if the bigends are going

Been reading a lot of your posts on the cam chain replacement. Think I will look to replace if I buy the car (and if not, the missus Vectra C will needs doing in the next 10k)

What tool do you use to counter-hold the torsional vibration dampener and how do you keep the engine horizontal when you remove the engine dampening block?

no need for a cam locking tool, that is only used to remove the cams

the engine is simply held up with a trolley jack, you need to lower or raise the engine to remove one of the lower timing chain cover bolts

torsional vibration dampener, not heard of one of those, but the engine mount is simply unbolted, the auxillary drive belt tensioner can be released with a 3/8" socket wrench
