Oil Cooler?

What are the advantages of having an oil cooler rad fitted? I've been looking on ebay and there are a few types available. The Vectra B 2.5 and 2.6 use an oil cooler and they both use the same part number. There are also coolers for the Cavalier and Calibra available.
Are they difficult to fit? where is the best place to mount it? I haven't got a lot of space behind the bumper now with the pre-rad there.

oil cooler is great for track days, it keeps the oil temp down and thus oil pressure up

best place would be near the front of the car, maybe behind the upper grille

The ones you have seen are all for the V6's and they are water cooled and sit in the middle of the V. This thread should explain it better. http://www.vectra-sport.com/forum/showt ... hp?t=12768 . I'm sure Vocky mentioned that the VX220 has one for the 2.2 so I would have thought that would be the best place to look?

Not sure! That's why I started this thread really. I was hoping that someone would be able to help. It would be best to get hold of a vx220 oil cooler really as the parts would be easy to source.

Most radiator Suppliers will make up one off oil coolers for you john(fast rads etc) then just a case of getting the pipes made up at a hydraulic specalist and fitting the 220 sandwich plate to the filter housing and jobs a good un..

yes you could, you need to remove the oil pressure switch and fit the return pipe from the cooler to there and then fit the oil pressure switch to the adaptor plate, I think you won't need part 8 in the list below as thats the vx220 pressure switch 🙂

what could i use a a rad then?
and also looking at the pic the sanwich plate goes under the housing its self for the oil filter
how does that come off?

is it me or is the cooling very efficient on the z22se engine

there is only about 2 or 3 pipes from coolant tank 2 engine 2 rad

fan switch kicks in at 90c as well

my car runs at 80c when cruising and wont go over 90c

i had an oil cooler on my astra gsi redtop and they are good but imo this engine dont need it unless you are doing some serious work on it

and the only reason i like the look of it as its something else to make the engine look more nicer 😃

they stabilize the oil temps

from what i remember it has a stat on it like coolant and only opens up when the oil hits a certain temp

Do these coolers fail on a regular basis? Its just that i've read about 3 failures in the last 2 weeks.
