Loss of power and smoke

Hi, I've got a vectra sri 150 and recently i've noticed a loss of power when accelerating hard through 5000rpm and also at other times(mainly roundabouts and slip roads). It is also idling badly(very lumpy)

I've also noticed a fair amount of smoke when first starting and accelerating hard, seems to go when warm and idling.

Have been told it is a blocked pre-cat.

Any other ideas?

Also started it up today after being away for just over a week to charge the battery a bit and the emissions light has now come on.

it could be a sticking EGR valve, simply unbolt it and check it's shut, if it's stuck open simply tap it closed

then buy a blanking plate from the dealer

We checked the egr valve wen it first started happening and it seems fine.

Think the warning light was because we forgot to plug the wiring back onto the egr valve.

Hopefully the pre-cat is coming out this week so with a bit of luck that will be the problem

Right took it to the local garage today and they think it is a fuel pressure problem. They couldnt test it tho cos they didnt have the right equipment.

Does fuel pressure sound right or are they just fobbing me off?

a new fuel filter is about £20 from the dealer, that would be the first thing to change if you suspect a fuelling issue

They said the fuel filter was new but possibly fitted wrong way round, how easy is it to change?

it's about 30 minutes work to change, probably easier to pay a garage £20 to do it

cheers, had the egr valve off again today and cleaned it with carb cleaner, its made an improvement but not brilliant yet.

I'm also getting small bits of carbon blowing out the back of the exhaust any ideas?

I would buy an egr blanking plate for £3.50 from the dealer; part number = 24575592

then mount the egr valve over the side

Which way should the arrow on the fuel filter be pointing so i can rule out the fuel filter being on the wrong way round?

The arrow is pointing towards the passenger side of the car, tried to follow the pipes but couldn't see too well where they went.

Just took it out and seemed a lot better at first but gradually got worse again.

Also noticed a hissing noise from underneath the area of the egr.

Any more ideas, cos im running out of cash to do much more this month?

Egr is now blanked off but hasn't made a difference really.

had a go at cleaning the throttle bodies today, not really much difference again, but probably slightly better.

Is there any way of checking the coil pack without getting another one?

Thanks for all the help so far.

The car has had a new fuel pump, timing chain done and a few other bits which i cant remember off the top of my head.

It has vastly improved but still loses power when pushed in the corners, unless its got a decent amount of fuel in it.

Any ideas whats happening when the fuel runs low?

the veccy B can suffer from the fuel pump pick up pipe dropping off in the tank, so you need to run half a tank or more to avoid problems. might be worth getting it checked :thumbup:

Will get it checked when i get the car back, any ideas if that isn't the problem?
