engine tapping

everytime i start my car it makes a tapping noise n will go after bout 3-5 mins of driving it. oil level is fine. but twice the car has stalled just when i was about to stop and didnt want to start again unless i kept pressin accelerator, once it was started didnt hold idle n died again. had to rev to limit to get it idle properly. that was a month ago and havent had any problems with it since apart from the tapping. any possible solutions???

I would recommend having the timing chain checked, it could be a faulty tensioner

Mine had been making a tap/rattle initially on startup for a bit and I had thought it was the tappets, again, this went away after a couple of mins, though now it looks my chain is on its way out - so this noise could be directly related (although I never had any of your other symptoms), so I would get it checked as you could defo do without it snappping!

Vocky, the tensioner comes in the timing chain kit doesnt it?

my car has stalled twice in two days, can tell when its about to do it as it starts to judder at steady speed. then when i stop it cuts out. is it to do wit the cam chain? engine managment light hasnt come on. :?

finally got the tapping sorted 😃 hopefully will stop the stallin. the exhaust manifold had 4 bolts loose.

Nooo... Blowing manifolds don't "Tap"... They "Tick" :wink:

Greetings. My Z22SE petrol engine has been making a weird ticking noise. As soon as I start the engine the noise starts too, then as I drive and the revs start increasing the ticking noise gets faster and faster.
I thought it was the accesories belt tensioner, so to be certain I removed the accesories belt and started the engine, the noise was still there. I changed the accesories belt just in case.
Then I thought it was the valves, but with the engine running I removed the oil cap and didn´t heart anything beside the normal.
Now the tricky part is that the noise is very loud when the engine is cold, but fade away as the engine gets warmer and warmer. A very few times I could hear the noise with the engine hot, but this is not usual.
I need help. Does anybody have an idea what this noise could be?
I will be extremely grateful for any tip you can provide me,

if the noise quietens down when the engine warms up it usually is a cracked exhaust manifold, they are about £100 from the dealer

Greetings. I was about to take out the exhaust manifold when I realized that 5 out of 8 bolts where loose. I tighten then to the specified torque and the ticking sound desapeared!!

Thanks for the advice. I´d never had thought that sound could be the exhaust manifold.

Yes I had this once on a Rover 2 litre twin ohc. It sounds just like camshaft problems but a knowledgeable mechanic who was used to quick engine repairs on track days told me that its known as 'snapping' in the trade. When the exhaust manifold heats up it expands and seals the gap.Tightening the manifold nuts solved the problem. Its also happened on my z22se.
