F23/F25 Gearbox Breather Mod

I was reading a thread on VVOC the other night about a mod that was applied to the F23 and F25 gearboxes to releave pressure build up in the box that could lead to oil leaks.

Apparently this was never deemed as a recall but is acknowledged on TIS as a modification. I have spoken to Mark Ashford at Courtenay and he confirmed that there is a kit available for this mod and that they had some in stock. I bought one and it arrived today.

It consists of:

Breather Screw - 90086885 £3.20
Vent Nipple - 90157801 £1.36
Vent Pipe (Rubber Hose) - 90342633 £2.82
Equalizer Tank - 90528569 £24.25
Bleeder Valve - 91152226 £3

All prices excluding VAT. Prices gained from Vxl main dealer.

all makes sense to me and most vx220 owners :lol:

the vx220 gearbox can put oil on the nearside tyre, so quite a nasty problem, the breather fixes it 🙂

Yep - a must have really when pushing hard on track with semi-slicks.

Not really required for on the road though.

I'll sort that out. I'll fit it and take some pics. All the part numbers and bits are shown above along with the prices.

I used a 8mm Hex bit in a 1/2" drive socket on an extension bar attached to a ratchet. Undo the original top plug and replace with the new breather plug. Screw in with fingers and then tighten up with a 17mm spanner. Slide the new hose onto the vent nipple and attach the rest of the hose securely against the bulkhead with a cable tie.

Probably a dumb question but do you just leave pipe to run to air or does it get an oil mist out of it that needs to be collected?

There's a one way valve on the end of the pipe. The chances of having oil mist are none really.

Could you use the old stile breathers off the old F18 gearboxes??

I've cropped the original photo from post #1 and put the part numbers from the same post #1 to the parts so I could ask if the ones in the yellow circle are correctly identified...

I suspect I need to do this to my F23. This 'bleeder valve':

not really needed for normal f23 oil fil only a must for running more oil most boxes come with them fitted the m32 6speed had one on the selector
its more like an anti leak valve no oil comes out when the cars upside down
not a one way if it was a one way valve the gearbox would be in vacuum when cold as it would be sealed from the valve
