smell of oil & petrol

sometimes when i am idle at lights i get the smell of oil and sometimes petrol when on take off

also smells greatly when car door is open

car does not blow oil from zaust neither does it use it

does not tap or rattle and is very responsive

also notice a kinda of blowing sound coming from either cat or downpipe etc - sounds like an automatic gearbox with a blown rear box

any ideas please

also coolant is completly clear, no gunk or milkshake anywhere and oil looks very clean

Maybe a leak coming from the exhaust near to the front? What car is it?

The other thing is that when the car is very low on fuel, you can sometimes smell the vent tube from the fuel tank.

took off the heatshield this morning and put my hand down by the downpipe joint to manifold

the whole of one side is blowing but i know it has had a new cat fitted - very similiar to x20xev engines on the manifold where u cant stop em blowing

hope the fricking manifold face aint warped

any tips lads as i am going to buy a new seal and bolts and loads of grease to get it tight

also does the car need to be on a ramp as i aint done work with a manifold on the bulkhead side

also i aint put the heat shield back on as it looks like one of the air con pipes is in the way, god knows how i got it off 😛 - will this be oki

Firstly..............DON'T under any circumstances use grease at the flange anywhere!!

If this goes down into the cat then the cat will be stuffed! You can buy a new laminated pressed steel gasket from Vauxhall. The bolts are actually studs that are part of the manifold.

All you should need is the new gasket. You can access the flange from under the car without a ramp. It is a little cramped but you can do it, I did and i'm not a small chap.

As for the heat shield, it can go back on but you have to undo the aircon pipe bracket and push it out the way slightly. This will allow a bit of room to move.
