deano1 hi there while searching the net for help on my car i came across this site so here goes. my z2.2se has started to smoke faster you go more smoke you get ive been told its the piston rings is this a common problem, engine still sounds nice. thxs
edbutler It does sound like piston rings mate 🙁 What you need to do is borrow a compression tester: Take all your spark plugs out Screw compression tester into plug #1 Crank over the engine with the key and note down the pressure after the gauge has levelled off its reading (took me about 7-9 crank cycles) - pressure should be 185-225 psi Repeat for plugs #2, #3 and #4 - Make sure all pistons are within 10% of each other on the above pressure reading. If one/more cylinders are low. Add a dessert spoon or 2 of oil into the cylinder through the plug hole and re-test it. If the pressure increases, youve got a dodgy piston ring im afraid. 🙁 The oil is used to temporarily seal the gap. You could always try using a heavier weight oil in the interim if you cannot get it fixed soon (like 10w50) but im not sure of the effectiveness of this. Good luck 🙂
vocky I would have a guess that the timing chain failed recently, the pistons get damaged and the rings stick, thus the engine smokes 🙁 otherwise it could be snapped rings, either way the head needs to come off to remove the pistons
