Still deciding repair, re-con or scrapyard engine. Which is most cost effective and most importantly give best results.

Will a vectra C 2.2 fit in a vectra B from a scrapyard.

Repairs can't be costed till engine stripped so its necessary to decide initially what route to take.

Scrapyards all seem to have 7 year old engines with sub 50K mileage and mileage disclaimers!

Vauxhall do an exchange remanufactured engine at £1850.

Help please dunno..

Surprised this thread has not been commented on. I quess there will be a lot of newbies interested on how to minimise cost impact of z22se going wrong, just doesn't stop at cam chain problems. Z22SE site complaining of going quiet. How about a response to this thread please? I'm sure it would quide a lot of future visitors to this site. E bay seems to have pushed up the price of scrapyard z22se engines to the point where when fitted it would be cheaper to look for another working same model/age car. Is there no cost effective answer please? notsure.gif

This thread has the potential for a lot of discussion surely this is needed to keep the site an interesting view cheers..

I can't comment, but I'm sure there will be someone along shortley (vocky, Daz, Benny etc) who will be able to give some insight as to the best route for you to take

I went for the re-manufactured engine. The mechanic that fit it for me said that it's basically a brand new engine really. I know it's a big outlay but it gives you piece of mind knowing you've got a brand new unit in there, trust me. I had the same dilemma - mechanic told me that it was almost impossible to predict the cost of repair and might end up only saving a few hundred pounds. Plus you're always going to be thinking, what else might have been stressed by the damage...?

secondhand engines are costing upto £1000 now, they have 50,000 miles on them too and still need a new timing chain kit + oil change before fitting

so my advice would be;

a - if you wish to keep your z22se car for a while then buy a vauxhall recon engine

b - have your engine repaired, but get the piston rings checked for free movement

3 - depending on the value of the car it may be best to sell it as a non runner / break it for spares :shock: cry..

Hi guys thanks for replies. This really is a difficult one cos had the car into an engine repairer whom offered a free quote and then cost me a £105 to get the car back saying its only a free quote i I have the work done. They thought it would be £600 - £700 for piston rings, then said about £1100 with new chain, plus VAT. In addition extra cost for anything extra unforseen i.e. if engine had to come out for rebore, plus vat. This may cost more than an engine exchange consisting of refurbishing same old head and buying in a 'short block' Re-engineered engine was going to cost £2000 fitted. Repair could be £1200 or £2400 depending on strip down investigation which was quoted as £230 to remove head and sump and presumably same or more to put back together again, so once stripped down unlikely you are hardly going to say put it back together without doing anything. It seems that once set off on the repair route expect any cost and you cant change your mind and go down the exchange engine route due to costs already incurred.

Be very interested if anyone else has had same grief.

Vocky's answer of new vauxhall exchange seems best but it is having to spend £2500+ on a car worth £950 trade £1900 retail. Any ideas please apart from scrap it? notsure.gif

I would consider whether it's best to sell it as a non runner for £500 and spend the £2500 on a new car

a tough decision, if you like the car and will keep it another two years then go for the vauxhall recon engine
