iainderby Wanted to share this experience regarding my 2.2 SRI 2001 z22se engine. I replaced my cyclinder head due to a crack and overhauled a second hand head. Fitted it ok and set up the timing to the Haynes setting i.e. lobes on No.1 cylinder pointing upwards and coloured coding the links. Re-built the engine and tried to start the car. No success and discovered after much research it should be set up to No.4 cylinder with the lobes pointing up. Success. Is Haynes wrong or can some engines be set up to No.!? This is the second time I have proved Haynes wrong. I rebuilt a Rover 200 K series engine and found you could not align the cams working specifically to their instructions. Wha is the general feeling of the forum on these issues?
vocky to be honest I just ensure that 1+4 are at tdc and the cams are aligned for the timing cogs, not paid much attention to the haynes book
iainderby But you can still set up the links with the lobes pointing upwards at No.1 cylinder and time your engine 180 degrees out with the two cylinders as you say in the top positon?
vocky the cam sprockets have an offset key, they only fit one way, then the crank is aligned so 1 + 4 are at tdc thats it
