New ECU - Stupid idea?

I was just reading some of the threads on here and vx220.org and it occurred to me that since the GMPT-E15 in our cars isn't really mappable, could we swap the ECU to a GM one that is? It's possibly a criminally stupid question, but what are the chances of the GMPT-E16 having the same connectors and pinout? There are billions of pins on our ECU connector, and not all of them can be used so it makes me wonder if there was some GM 'standard' pinout for ECUs.

If it were the case, a second-hand E16 ECU (possibly wiring harness too if wires wouldn't fit) couldn't cost much from the US... Maybe there are other cars with ECUs that are easily mappable (yourself?) too? Just thinking as getting a new FBW ECU is going to be expensive otherwise.

I've not heard of a plug&play replacement for the E15.

And ofcourse it is mappable. The problem is that tuners haven't seem to have put the effort in to figure the standard software and maps out..

when I was planning on building a z22se Turbo, my list of parts required included a sierra cosworth ecu and engine loom 🙂

so not a stupid idea at all what..

if you find an ecu from a uk car, which has plenty of maps available, let us know cheers..

That's why I bought an US P12 ECU for my 2.0 LSJ engine...
Because this one is supported by HP-tuners. 😃
(But probably doesn't fit on a 2,2, as the 2.0 has a different crank sensor timing..)

There are not many ECU's which support the fly by wire throttle. The US GM16 is not supported by HP tuners but there is someone who cracked it. Trifecta offers "on-line" tuning of this ECU. (and f.i. makes running the 2.4 TB possible.)
The GM 15 is probably not that different, so maybe he is able to offer us some tuning?? There is some market here in Europe with all our 2,2's

Ahh. I didn't realise the E16 wasn't cracked by the majority of tuners either 🙁 I remembered seeing a website somewhere about an open-source effort to crack the E15 ECU - can't find it now though. It's a shame, because if we could get the firmware there is a good chance that it could be disassembled and cracked pretty comprehensively.

I'll have to keep my eyes open for a decent programmable ECU - I hear the Honda ones were quite good, but i'm not sure if that was just the Type R 🙁 Should finally get the vx220 back on the road today, so depending how well it copes with the new cams + head my hunt for new ECUs might intensify! :S

Yeah it would make our life much easier with a system like the HP-tuners,
bet it`s possible if someone with enough knowledge get their hands on one..

Best chance would be if we ask Trifecta what the possibilities are for supporting our GMPT-E15. Or maybe through a tuner...
But not sure how it would work out, as the US GM ECU's probably use a different OBD protocal than the european ECU's.

Arent the OBD protocal the same for all OBD cars, I tought so since we all can use the same OBD readers, such as the ScanGauge II and Dash-hawk

If I remember correctly there are 3 ODB protocols around the world...
And GM in the US uses a different one then GM (Opel, vauxhall, saab etc.) in Europe. what..
But I think the available OBD readers automatically detect what protocol is used.

And back to the New ECU story:
Yesterday I received a package from the US, containing a P12 PCM from a 2006 Cobalt SS LSJ engine. 😃
So now I have a complete 2004 LSJ engine, the engine wire loom, a P12 PCM and even a cut off pcm connector for the car wiring loom... Together with some PCM scheme's the puzzle should be complete now.

Ive also got a SS ECU laying around, got it with the SC, its with the 205hp software, so if anyone need`s it.....
