Lightened flying wheel...worth the money?

I'm starting to think a lightened flying wheel should be a really interesting mod for the z22se, just lo allow it revving faster...what you think? :roll:

Has anybody installed one? dunno..

Any suggestions? I've seen several options in UK an Germany, but not sure which one could be the best. dunno..

By the way, could the z22se engine suffer some side effects using an extreme light flying wheel? :oops:

no the engine will be fine, there is a speficic one we use, but cant find the link at the mo.

I have a courtenay lightened flywheel, but you can get various other makes / suppliers

they seem to be priced around the £200 mark + fitting

I've got a Courtenay lightened flywheel and sport clutch. As above, worth every penny. The weight saving is unbelievable. I got to hold the OE and then the lightened one and I was amazed.

Have to say I disagree with most of the comments. I found the courtenay lightened flywheel didn't make a decent enough difference. Ok the car is revs ever so slightly better, and the acceration in 1st/2nd is marginally improved but certainly not worth the cost - specially if you are paying £££ for fitting.

I've also removed the balance shafts and the car still isn't that responsive (although better) - just don't expect huge improvements to the work horse of an engine the z22se is.

I would imagine that your car being as light as it is compared to the big lump that is a Vectra or Astra you wouldn't notice much of an improved response? I felt that my car was a fair bit quicker up through the box.

Given the quite short gear ratio of the vx220, I really believe it could revs a bit faster...if the standard flying wheel is about 10 Kg, as I read elsewhere, there should be some margin to improve there what..

I've send them an e-mail to ask if it's the flying wheel...just about 1 Kg!!! :shock:

That's not a flywheel mate. That's a lower pulley.

must say i noticed a difference on the bus's pulling power but as said was v.expensive to have fitted
and don't considder the regal one...it had the holes mis-aligned :shock:

That's what I expect/want to feel...but I'll wait until I change the timming chain to replace the flying wheel too, may be this winter :wink:

The idle does not worsen when I install a lightened flywheel? Looking for a Bastuck flywheel, 5,5kg. (how much is the standard one exaktly?)
The engine hp does not change, but the hp at the wheel increases, is this effect noticeable at the full speed range? As you know, we don´t have a speed limit in Germany, and on highways its important for me, that the acceleration at least does not worsen in speed areas about 180km/h (about 115 mph).

The standard weight is 9.5kg. The idle will be fine.

The lightened flywheel will allow the engine to rev up quicker. You won't notice any drop in acceleration either. Its a good mod to carry out.

Ok, I am going to order the flywheel this week.

I drove a z22se with lightened flywheel 2 weeks ago. But my colleague had also fitted dbilas cams at the same time. The engine's idle was lumpy. It has misfiring, it stalled, and so on. Awfully. That's why I got a little bit insecure. Don't want any cams, so I think with the flywheel everything will be alright.

I know Hitec. They are building the compressor-mods for the z22se here in Germany. But why did you posted the contact of them?
Should I buy there?

I posted HITEC as they are located in Germany which I thought would have been easier for you regarding shipping. HITEC also work very closely with Courtenay Sport here in the UK.
