Tuning for economy

Ok so there is a 13% difference on air/fuel ratio for an internal combustion engine between running as efficiently as possible and running to create the most power. As fuel is around 110p / litre, a 13% improvement in fuel usage would be great - Is this something Courtenay / Superchips would entertain?

improving economy will cost money, so maybe not so cheap

by creating better flow you also get better economy, so a ported head, waisted stem valves, a ported tb, a 4-2-1 manifold, a sports cat, a sports exhaust and a good intake system will if driven gently give more mpg

note that 'cams' are not in the list of economy items

A few of us have just bought innovate wideband kits. These are wideband lambda sensors that can go in where your main lambda goes, and a controller that can pretend it is a normal lambda sensor but shift the air-fuel ratio it senses, fooling the ECU into adjusting to a different mixture.

Normal sensors sense 14:1 I think, but this will sense up to 16:1 so you could lean the engine out... Not sure if that would actually save you any fuel though, as leaning it off too much could cause damage and it might make more sense to richen it up to get more power and just not drive as hard...

Failing that I wonder if anyone has done an engine swap to one of those 900cc 3 cyl Corsa engines 😃

Sorry to sound harsh but if you want economy don't p1ss around with a 2.2l petrol engine, just buy a common rail injection diesel.

Winstar, its true about diesel, last year when I bought into the 2.2. fuel was still under a £1 a litre!! and I can't get a good part ex on the astra. I'd like to go for a Leon 150 Deisel, but the Mortgage has just gone up too - -Oh Bother and other such words!!

and people were moaning when I used my 50mpg+ cdti to go to courtenays instead of my 20 mpg vx220 :lol:
