Strange engine noise!

Hello,

I have a strange engine noise it is metallic sounding but not regular in rhythm!

If I start from cold and leave it running without moving until it is warm there is no noise!

If I start and drive 150 yards or so it appears, if I then allow the engine to idle for a few seconds it goes away.

If I start and drive normally the noise goes away after about 1 mile.

If I start the engine from warm or hot the noise appears sometimes but not at others!

I bet your bored by now but any ideas would be welcome!! Thanks for any help.

could be a cracked exhaust manifold?

It may just be exhaust manifold not tightened up sufficently, when it heats up it seals manifold to cylinder head through heat expansion and noise stops. I had it on present car 2.2sri and a previous overhead cam Rover 820i, i was told by a mechanic that this noise was referred to as 'snapping' in trade. Worth checking out as simple fix. dunno..

Take of the exhaust heat sheild nice and simple a few of us on here have had the manifold crack.
