burning oil help !!!!

well i put few links on ere past couple months.basicaly been using a lot of oil....say 5 litres or 6 since jan time.had slight leak by alternator but not dripping on floor etc just mainly build up..took my car to garage today for them check it not head gasket etc.basicly them come back and said there lot burnt oil round tailpipes and when they took the engine filler cap off with engine running there was llot smoke coming out of it.they said wihtout stripping down they cudnt tell me why this but said think bpout new car or engine...well im 6 months into a 3 year finance deal so tht bit of a pain realy.they did say the engine does sound sweet enough and said i could try putting anb additive in the oil...engine stop burn etc and try tht...any 1 know wht best to do...? im bit worried now it going blow up or summit every time i go out csh..

sounds like the oil scraper rings are clogged up

Hi vocky do you know of any way to unclogg the scraper rings without stripping pistons down i.e. additive or something? notsure.gif

Have same problem but inspecting the plugs it is on cylinder no.1 🙁

hiya you having same probs? how did you find out? rang my garage back and they said there are some additives to free up pistons etc due to gunk and sludge..going hve look in halfords.got be worth a try

i remember years ago when i owned a montego..(first car ..it had turbo badge and bucket seats..well i was 17 and half then)i took the plugs out and put does redex in each of the holes...then cranked engine without plugs in to clear the chambers..then had to run car for a bit..cue llots of smoke from the crap being blown out...could this be a means to free the clogged rings ???

I would be vary wary about adding addatives, Last thing you want to do is add some thing to the oil that will then thicken it and then block oil jet way.

Sure one of the techies advise correctly.

hi djsri - yep had same problem oil burning for some time - got progressively worse. Not totally sure if its piston scraper ring clogging or valve stem oil seal.

No. 1 cylinder plug wet coated with clear oil so a pretty heavy oil supply from one of these problems - causing engine to run on 3 cylinders unless I feather throttle then plumes of smoke when it fires up!! dunno..

Any ideas please? notsure.gif

hiya//well im going monitor it closely..i aint gettin plumes of smoke out the back end as you would think.the engine seems too pull alrgiht etc.going take plugs out weekend if get chance.so not realy sure myself.im pretty stumped and wish i had never got rid of my 156000 miles v6 veccy..had none this crap and tht was p reg..this thing been 1 prob after another..not impressed with car at all
