New router = crap download speeds??

I've finally gone wireless and running a netgear dg834. I use Macs and use Acquisition to download files. Using my old router I could achieve speeds of upto 100+kb/s but now the new one won't go any quicker than 5kb/s. I've tried poking around in the menus but can't find anything to change, any ideas what to look for or what to alter?

as far as i know wireless isnt as quick as cable anyway

mines the same was with pipex with normal fixed modem, getting speeds on utorrent of around 400kb/s, a 700mb film would take 30 mins, now with the sky wireless router, im lucky to get 20-30kb/s, anyone got any ideas?

100k down to 5k, even running wireless there is somthing serious wrong. What secuirty have you got enabled wep / WPA, have you enabled any mac filtering.

Have you hard wired in to test that it is the wireless side and not other firewall settings on the firewall?

Sounds like you have got some setting wrong somewhere.

I'm guessing it's one of the settings but being a little lacking in grey matter when it comes to these things it's not really happening. I have a Mini mac attached to the modem by ethernet and that is getting the same speeds as the macbook. I think I have wep password set up, it was a really long one that had to be put into the macbook before I could connect wirelessly. Don't know about mac filtering. I have also loked at the firewall but can't see anything obvious.

As long as you have connected then the WEP or WPA secuirty key is correct, so dont worry about that.

What ISP are you with?

When you intially joined up you would have had some advanced settings with DNS settings etc to manually enter. If you have lost these it is not an issue your ISP will either re-send them or have them on there help / FAQ page.

Otherwise a bit of searching and you should find the correct settings on a forum.

If all the settings are correct, it may be worth checking what version firmware you have on the router and if there is any updates currently avalible from Netgear.

that maybe the case on a local network, but wireless is still faster than any internet broadband connection, therefore it shouldn't matter in this case, however it does sound like a setting is not right somewhere.

I used a Netgear DG834 V2 router when I was with my old ISP, and I still have this router.

Do you need to have any port forwarding open with the torrent you are using? You may also need to take into account that the ISP may be throttling torrent downloads. Is it just the torrents which are slow, or general download traffic?
