Head Gasket problems with smoking engine

I have noticed on 2 other ecotec forums that a smoking engine can be caused by valve stem oil seals, piston rings and head gasket problems are also mentioned.

On the z22se head gasket problems related to smoking don't appear. Has anyone experienced this cause please? notsure.gif

My engine was fine before a head gasket replacement and smokey afterwards :shock:

I can't recall reading about a z22se with a dodgy head gasket dunno..

smoking is normally the rings, cracked piston or damaged valve guides

but a dodgy head gasket could cause smoking..

rings - can gunge up and cause low compression - check compression

piston - can crack - check compression

valve guides - can crack when the cam chain snaps - visual inspection with valve removed

head gasket - pattern part could be poor quality - replace with genuine part

Thanks Vocky could be sub standard gasket. No 1 plug oiling up (wet) after only 2K.

Is there a check for valve stem oil seals apart from visual inspection?

the main reason the z22se ends up smokey after head work is because the headwork was usually due to a snapped timing chain.

they fail to notice a cracked valve guide or damaged piston and end up with a smoky exhaust.

it's not easy to notice the cracks, thats why they get over looked, a simple mistake but rather costly :cry:
