How Much Oil ???

Is there something wrong with my engine has im forever having to top it up.

ive checked for leaks and theres not a drop anyway but i use shell helix and i wait till the tid displays says check oil then i put a quater of a litre in and shes fine for about a month then check oil again pops up and so forth - when i had magnatex i never had to top up but this shell helix is like water and seems to burn off or somthing ????

some engines will burn a little, good rule of thumb is check it weekly, if your still worried then checked it more often, dont leave it until the car tells you to top it up :shock: the chain is too dependant on a good oil supply. once they run dry its not long before they snap. :shock: :shock: :shock:

well i had magnatec in it up to the top when the chain snapped and had a new one fitted with modified tensioner - i think i need to top it right up and not put a little in at a time - but im worried about putting in too much.... its only the tid display that warns me not the warning lights on the dash - also i find if im booting it round a bend or at high speed the message comes up and if i slow down it goes off - is helix too watery ????

Your creeping in to the big black hole called " what type of oil do I use " Area. I personally use shell Helix in my car and have had no problems, some wll say use VX stuff from the dealer, mine is running on the Fully synthetic 5w 40, and I have had no problems at all, I keep it topped to the top line on the dipstick, you should'nt get any messages if its topped correctly to that line, if you still get them then you may have a further problem :shock: :cry:

i dont top it to the line cause i never can get a propper readin on my dipstick...... how many times do you top up to the line ??

for me personally, Look at it every other week or so, top it up 6-8 weeks with about 1/2 lt not even that really.every engine is different. you should monitor how much you use over a month see what you get? dunno..

i buy one of those little bottles of helix and put about under a half of that and that usaully lasts roughly about 2 months or so before the warning again but i never fill it to the top line ...does that sound right ????? - when is best to check the oil - on a cold engine or warm - cus when i check when cold its near the bottom and warm right up the stick.....ive checked my garage and theres not a drop - neither underneath the car and its always been like this and not sunddenly started - should i be worried ???

I dont thinks so dunno..
It dont matter when you check it ,so long as it has settled and drained to the sump after running.
when its warm it has only changed the viscosity to the operating condition of that type of oil.
if your putting in that amount over that time then I think thats fine so long as your mileage is normal.
I woud top it to the top line of your dipstick though.
A TIP ! if you can not see the oil on the stick, dab it against your hand and see the oil patch on your skin, an easier way to see if there is oil on the dipstick.

Mine seems to like a drop of oil too !!

On the subject, how much do you lot put in after an oil and filter change ?
Haynes manual appears to advise more oil than whats needed ?

It's odd some seem to use oil others dont. Mine uses around 1litre every 1200 miles or there abouts. On a long steady run doesnt use that much. from bottom of the dipstick to the top is meant to be 1 litre, i put about 800ml in and just keep an eye out not to overfill.

When i get a full oil change done out of 5 litres i am normally left with 250ml of oil left in the container.

I always use Vauxhall 5-30 fully synth, seem to run better then the 10-40 semi but uses a bit more.

I think the original service manual stated 5litres after an oil change but has since been revised to 4.7.

Mine hardly uses any, maybe a litre every 10k miles? She's a high miler too, 105k, but still doesnt seem to burn much. Even still, I check it regularly as the z22se doesnt like being low on oil from what i've read

I only use 5w40 because its free for me.... 😃

I use 5W-40 Liqui Moly Synthoil High Tech and engine use about 1 L per 10.000km 🙂
