MSD MEFI5

I noticed that MSD say they are releasing MEFI5 this year.

The MEFI5 is supposed to support dbw.

Interestingly, they also sell "kits" for the different Ecotec incarnations including an ECU, cabling harness, maps etc - their configurator includes the L61.

Is this a chance for a stand alone ECU, fully remappable, with native dbw-support, including a z22se-specific harness and base maps from a supplier with genuine knowledge of the ecotec?

I have no previous experience of MSD, are their services and products any good?

gotech are also testing ETB contoller standalones (with UK supplier/mapper too)

MSD is good stuff in the US but as usual little to no support over here unless its purely for their IGN stuff as used in drag cars.

I have e-mailed MSD and asked for a more specific release date, and if they are planning of suppliying an L61 wiring harness and some base maps.

MSD do also have the MEFI4, that comes with harness and base-map for the L61, but no electronic trothle though. But how is this on our cars? Since we have the Can-bus system for stack etc. etc.

the stack dosent communicate over CAN (no bus sorry... its a protocol as opposed to a load of lines making a bus). It takes individual signals and does its thang with them.

the lotus with the yota engine does have CAN but i dont think the stack is the same 😉

its odd as according to all the Cobalt owners the L61 has had an ETB since it was released... but that MEFI4 dosent list as being able to control it... maybe it just splices into the loom and lets the PCM think its happy but not doing anything. Similar to what Jam-Sport said to me (and they are on the list of "Tuning related firms that Stuart dosent think are bastards" lol) with regards to any form of aftermarketness.... although I have otehr ideas with them

It doesn`t seems like MSD is aiming for "normal" cars with their system, but only kit-cars, boats etc..

The MEFI will NOT drive an electronic throttle body and it will not interface with the factory ECU or control the transmission. The MEFI is primarily for transplanting an engine into an off-road application like a boat, race car, or sand rail.

I'm starting to think getting an Elise pedal and cable setup is going to be easier... but getting a cable TB that fits will be a whore

That`s for the 4, the 5 will drive the electronic throttle body and will be a much better solution, it will be released this year. Finding a cable throttle body is easy though, they use it on some of the US cars....

I doubt the Stack unit won't work with the MEFI

Remember MEFI are Marine units, they are sssssooooooooo limited on everything
