Cam`s have arrived from Piper, only one little problem

My cams arrived today and Im fitting them today, but in the papers that came with the cams, they say you need to coat cam and followers with Piper cam lube!! Well, I dont have Piper cam lube, wonder why Piper dont supply this with the cams if it`s needed?
Any way around this ??

IIRC, they do normally supply it dunno..

I'm sure Vocky can confirm this either way because he fitted the same cams, but either way it may be worth giving you "local" Piper agent a call ??

Sounds to me like a caution, when you rebuild engines you should never put them together dry, I would say it is to stop wear on the initial turn over,ie the period between engine start and the time it take the oil to be pumped to the cams for lubrication..... you can use a thin layer of grease or get some lubricant from a local engine supplier.

Vocky is away on a training course, so not sure when you'll get a reply. I would guess that it is as already mentioned, to lubricate the parts before the oil is pumped up to the cams. Splash some clean oil over the cams and followers and all should be okay.

Cam lube is just assembely grease. Sometimes when your building an engine it takes several weeks and by the time you actually start it the parts can be dry. Assembly grease stops that and also helps keep the parts lubricated whilst the oil finds its way up. If your putting the same cams you took out back in they will already be worn in as such anyway so I wouldnt worry. Mine have been in and out half a dozzen times and whilst I used assembly grease (which piper didnt supply) the first time, I didnt bother all the other ocasions, I just made sure they were wet and cranked the engine over a couple of times with the plugs out to push the oil through.

Thanks for the info, I just putted some fresh oil over the cams and followers and started it up, went out for a little test drive, but got the cops on my tail so I had to take it easy :lol:
Got some tickover though dunno..

did the cams need bedding in first?

ARP make some assembly fluid, but I tend to simply use a thick engine oil and have even used gearbox oil before (the oil gets changed in less than 30 miles on a new build of mine anyway lol)

At least 10bhp increase in peak power but its not all about peak power increasess. It pulls hard right to the limmiter with the cams fitted instead of running out of breath above 5500rpm which widens your power band.

Did you run the cams for 30mins at 3k to harden them?

I have heard a few people have really lumpy tickover with cams. Have you dont the FPR mod?

Not sure to all anderstand :oops:
I anderstand that the increase is only at high revs.
If it is, is it intersting with the 2.4 inlet manifolds ? Which give some more at high revs only too.
The risk would be to get a low engine torque to the middle revs. And it should always push to the limit.

Other questions, does the fuel trim ok. Not too lean whis the 2.4 inlet ?

Thats for the regrind service. I.e. you send them some cams and they send them back reground to sports profile. Cams alone the torque was still good, but it is lost a little with the 2.4l intake manifold. Fitting a good exhaust manifold restores the low down torque though and as long as you have a proper exhaust and intake system then I've found the torque far better than standard.
