Upgrade head unit

I'm keen to replace the standard head unit in my car, not sure of the model number but its the standard cassette deck, with a cd head unit.

I'd still like to be able to use the wheel buttons and the info display, so my question is what are the options available? Presumably not all units are compatible?

Not particularly clued-up about ice and stuff so any info would be welcome!

most top brands should have some sort of steering wheel control adapter (at a price) that just plugs in off the main wiring loom for the stereo. or you could get a stalk adapter from autoleads as thats what i have for my sony headunit

I have the same for my Sony as well. My parents had a Kenwood HU in their old Vectra, and they also bought a module to allow it to work with the MFD, cost about £90.....it's still sat in my in-laws garage I think, and they sold the car 4 years ago

thanks for the advice everybody, got a better idea of what to look for now. The standard speakers don't seem to bad, just gonna replace the head unit I reckon.

Alpine mate. Change to this and you'll never look back. I've had Alpine headunits for the last 15 years and I can honestly say I can't find anything to beat them. They have steering wheel interface adaptors available at the cost of £65. All plug and play. The newer ones now enable you to run the dash display too.

2007 model Alpines offer full MFD, 2006 partial.
Any way got this in my 2006 Alpine model it also has the patch lead, i paid £27 new and delivered. What it will not do is fast forward or reverse of the track playing from steering wheel controls, it skips to the start or next track, everything else ok inc tuner. Displays time and date in the middle plus the usual stuff elsewhere. Basically its only the Sony thats different, below is for a Kenwood same part as an Alpine!
