Driving to work down the A14 tonight at about 70-75mph, all of a sudden on comes the ECU light and the traction control light, no response from the accelerator, so on come the hazzards and I pull over onto the hard shoulder, igntion is turned off and left for 5 mins, then try a start it again - just a whirring noise, no sign of life at all, not even turning over - not looking good.
The RAC turn up and the guy then says it sounds like the timing belt - so I correct him and point out that it's a chain - which he states "don't normally break", it get's towed to my friend who is a mechanic, he looks at it as says it may just be the starter, upon closer inspection he says the starter is fine so he thinks it may be the timing chain...
Oh marvellous!
So, any help, hints, tips or advice are gratefully recieved, I'll be going to start stripping down the engine cover and rocker cover later today to see what's what, but what does it sound like to you people?
Timing chain? If so what am I looking at? New cylinder head and valves? piston damage?
It's a W reg (2000) 2.2 16v Coupe with 80k on the clock and good service history with most of it at Vauxhall dealers (although it was due one now), had no problems with it at all - this just happened right out of the blue.
I've been reading about people getting Vauxhall to pay or part pay for the work if it does go - what's the gen on this please?
Cheers for any help
Jules
