Camshaft Locking Tool

Just a quick one.... is there a camshaft locking tool on the market for cam chain changes?? If so would anyone be so kind to point me in the right direction

You dont actually need a locking tool if you are replacing the chain with a new one....

tbh, i think it would be easier with the locking tool or locking with 2 spanners and mole grips...
I found that the spockets jumped all the time but prob just the way i did it 🙂

what I do is fit one camshaft sprocket, then align the other cam with a spanner and slip the second cam sprocket on, easy dunno..

it isnt a cam locking tool dont lock the cams just allows you to check the timing on a old chain ..but if you useing the new chains no need for it ...a out dated tool from the start of engine production when they didnt know about the faulty oil feeds and all that .....

Why the difference because it's an old chain?

When you fit a new chain there a certain links that are colour coded that match up with timing marks on the sprockets. Once the engine has been rotated, the links and the timing marks will not line up again, hence if the cam timing is out your only way of checking it is to fit the cam timing tool that ONLY fits if the timing is correct. The cam sprokets have a hole each that the timing tool locates on. If the chain has jumped on the sprockets, the holes will be either too close to one another or too far apart thus not allowing the spigots on the timing tool to fit in the holes.

all chains are colour coded, but once the engine has turned a full revolution the marks have moved a notch, they keep moving every revolution until eventually they align again, then the process is repeated.

to save cranking the engine over and over the alignment tool simply ignores the markings and aligns the cam sprockets to check all is ok, a 60 second job compared to ten minutes of cranking the engine until the marks align.

Here`s a question for someone to work out... how many revolutions of the engine will it take for the links to line up again????????

74 links in the timing chain so about 150 revolutions dunno..

So....in short....original chain & sprockets:

Align front pulley at timing mark (#4 TDC, lobes outward)
Attack chain with coloured links to bottom pulley, INT & EXH cam marks.

Could an alternative check be to align bottom pulley on mark and measure distance
between cam gear holes?
