all chains are colour coded, but once the engine has turned a full revolution the marks have moved a notch, they keep moving every revolution until eventually they align again, then the process is repeated.
to save cranking the engine over and over the alignment tool simply ignores the markings and aligns the cam sprockets to check all is ok, a 60 second job compared to ten minutes of cranking the engine until the marks align.
