Frozen rear brakes

went to go to work this morning and as i released the handbrake there was no tension on the cable and the rear brakes had frozen on, even moving the car backwards and forwards did release them and i tried lifting the handbrake up and down and that still didn't release them.

This has never happened before is there anything i can do to stop it happening in the future.

The only thing i thought of is leave the handbrake off but in leave it in gear.

it could be the handbrake cable has water/rust inside dunno..

the only way to find out is remove the cable and check 🙁

it's a very common problem on the vx220 and I had to fit a new cable due to internal rust :roll:

there isn't a seperate drum for the handbrake is there, the handbrake works on the discs is that correct?

its "common" for the rear calipers on MK4's to fail (but they tend to fail off lol)

as vocky said, check the cable incase its frozen and expanded the cable to sieze.

just phoned the wife and she says it's ok now, so either it's thawed out or she driving around with the rear wheels locked up LOL

If I wash my car and then put it in the garage after drying it, I always find that my rear brakes lock on to the discs after its been left overnight. Makes it bloody awkward when you've got to reverse back out of the garage again.

depends which make calipers u hav 4got which way it is now but i hav the gud 1z on my car lol!! wen u get new calipers from vauxahall they give u the new type with a fitting kit old 1z r sh1t ! u should b able 2 tell cuz the old 1z the handbrakes not as gud as the new 1z 😃

i just leave it in gear that does the job
