Temp sensor

Ok - so far my vectra has been fine, its a 2001 sri 150 vec b. Since driving the car for around 600 miles i noticed some funny things happening with the temp gauge in the dash ?!?

Up hill it starts to work and on the flat was ok. then it stopped, started , stops and starts etc.

Now it takes forever to read anything and then settles around 80. If I turn the car off and restart it reads 90 !!! (motorway driving at around 75 - 85 for 30 miles, to test)

First question -

Where is the temp sensors on the 2.2 engine (need to get a haynes manual!)

Second - I assume its a thermostat or something? pointers please.

It's 50/50 by the sounds of it. You can expect the engine to raise in temperature if you switch off and then turn it on again because there's nothing cooling it in between switch off and on again.

90` sounds about right on the motorway with a standard thermostat.

I would start with the sensor personally, only due to the fact that you say the gauge is working then it isn't.

Its located on the thermostat housing.

looking at the engine from the front, is it at the bottom by the sump?

too many wires and plugs!

The thermostate housing is on the right hand side looking at it from the front. go towards the back of the engine you will see a hose 2" ish running from the front to the rear, at the end you will see a domed like alloy componant, this is your thermostate, JonnyN is refering to that I think. see how you get on.The hose runs under the a black reservoir called the power steering pump, remember right hand side as you look at the engine. 🙂
