2001 on Y plate from new. Potted history -
Noticed a plastic scrapping against metal whirring sound from engine cam cover could be heard inside car, reported at 1st service 1000 miles. Was assured by chief mechanic at main dealers as nothing to be concerned about. Asked if it was cambelt, said it was chain driven did not need replacing and would last life of engine!!
Engine ok until about £60K when small but inexplicable water loss started. Oil use about 1 litre every 3,500miles
At 90K water loss increased with small globules of oil floating in header tank.
Garage checked out car coolant system, pressure check, sniffer check found nothing wrong, serviced car and said ok to continue running did not think it was gasket problem..
At 105K coil pack failed and replaced, all ok but internal water loss about 1 litre every 200 miles.
At 110K engine cut out on motorway blown head gasket. Failed cat chocking exhaust - no prior warning.
New head gasket, told chain ok. Left with smoking engine requiring 1 litre of oil every 100 miles, still loosing water. Did not smoke before head gasket failed.
Now done 128K drives like a dog and totally pissed off with it.
Checked with vauxhall about oil lubricator size - informed that car had undergone mod at 10K which probably explains why chain has lasted.
Read about every thread on X22SE website which is a great website but unless you are a Benny or Vocky this engine is beyond the scope of most garages to repair once it goes wrong.
