It would appear my VX has eaten it's engine cryb..

Vaux want £1400 + vat for a recon, plus a load of labour and other parts. Had a quote from enginemart for a similar price (on an exchange basis).

What do second hand engines tend to go for, roughly? There's one on ebay for £1200, is that typical?

Also, assuming I didn't want to pay nearly 2 grand to vauxhall in labour just to fit it, could it be done DIY? My general level of expertise with a spanner on the VX includes changing engine mounts, front clam removal, pad/disc/suspension fitting, etc - that sort of stuff. Changing an engine sounds like a mammoth task.

Finally (vocky ;-) ), if I'm in the process of stickin a new engine in, what else can be done easily/cheaply? Flywheel? Balancer shafts? Anything else?

typical price of a z22se engine is £600-£700 secondhand, expect to replace the timing chain though - £125

I would certainly do the balancer delete and fit a lightened flywheel whilst the engine is out 🙂

taking the rear clam off isn't that hard, just time consuming :roll:

engine removal isn't that hard either, just loads of bolts :lol:

I have a new engine hoist laying about, so you can borrow it to swap the engine over cheers..

plus I'm sure you could get a helping hand if you get stuck 🙂

might be cheaper to repair your bottom end dunno..

I have a set of conrods, Nick B has a crank, new bearing shells a few gaskets and bolts = job done dunno..

Thanks. Do you know anyone around MK worth going to who could take a look at the bottom end? I could do with getting someone to take a proper look rather than vxl's "yeah, it's knackered mate" diagnosis that basically involved them switching it on, taking a listen, then switching it off again.

two things to remember about the z22se

1 - the earlier chain WILL snap

2 - low oil level causes the big end bearings to spin, which makes the conrod big ends oval, then they snap and go through the block :shock:

DO NOT DRIVE IT.... it's currently repairable, conrod failure isn't cheers..

I can pop round and confirm if you want dunno..

you might even get away with just removing the head and sump, as long as the crank is still ok

i can recommend the engines from engine mart it is a vege engine which is a very large engine remanufactuers, mine has done 7k now and it runs sweet as a bird.

Theres a 2.2 coupe going on ebay now for £1500. Its had a roof drop on it (?) But engine is still intact. You could buy it, have the engine out, sell the rest for bits (Ill have the leather for mine!)

Hello all,
what is wrong with a vx replacement engine? and is it comparable to the Vege engine that Furn is talking about.(have pm'd furn previously regarding this)
i am in a similar predicament to you so would appreciate any guidance/advice.
Local garage is looking at replacing the engine with a swap out unit from vx(what comes with it??. does it come with chains and water pump?)
the price difference for a new head complete chains(x2) replacement and water pump is about £200-£250 cheaper max than the replacment engine option.
also does anybody know of or can they supply the balancer shaft mod on a swap out basis + a few pounds for there trouble because if the sums work out for a new engine then it would make sense.

Can't really start buying smashed up cars and taking bits out of them. Simply don't have the space or time for that sort of thing really.
