AAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
It's doing my head in.
Coolant has been leaking into my oil and producing a nice mayo. I have managed to temporarily stop it by using wynn's leakstop but recently it has not proved to be so effective.
Basically it started leaking and i checked for external leakage. none was found after extensive checks under the car.
The car has been to the garage for a couple of days and to date so far they have not been able to conclusively diagnose the fault. The system has been pressure tested and seems ok with pressure readings correct and the fan & pressure reading operating within normal parameters.
I have already posted regarding this but thought that i should start a new thread, so to find out more details if you can view my previous posts then please do so a s this may shed some light onto the subject.
work carried out to date..
- leak check and pressure test.
- Intake manifold removed to check as far as possible for water/coolant ingress via the intake area and check around the intake ports for cracking.
- Checking the spark plugs for coolant contamination.
- Compression test of engine. ( good reading's were observed)
these have thrown up nothing apart from slight contamination of a couple of the plugs but from looking at the intake manifold and head there is a ''crankcase vent'' which feeds into the manifold. this would be consistant with the emulsification of the oil due to coolant ingress and eventual ingestion via the crankcase vent system through the engine as far as i can make out.
Next step is to completely flush out the cooling system to further investigate the problem, hopefully allowing the leak to ''show itself'' and make identification easier.
i have noticed an increased noise from the chain end of the engine in the vacinity of the coolant pump but from what i have read and under stand it could be due to the lubrication qualities of the oil lacking due to water asborbation/emulsification and is obviously not good as these seem to eat the chains for a living.
This is apparent when revved or giving the engine some welly during overtaking. If driven quickly/hard on the way to work and back (50miles) the coolant low warning will illuminate sometime within as little as 30-35 miles requiring top-up to complete the journey.
I have had emulsified oil around the filler cap but this dissappears when the wynn's is/has been added due to the burning/evaporation off process that takes place in the engine through heat.
Possible suggestion to date have been , cylinder head cracked?, head gasket unservicable and the water pump sealing failing llowing water/coolant to mix with oil in the crankcase via the chains.
Is it possible to charge the cooling system with a coloured gas as you do with airconditioning to allow fault identification/tracing?? (engine not running obviously)
Any help insight you can give me would really be appreciated as there is a lot of head scratching as to how to further investigate and diagnose the snag without unecessarily stripping the engine.
Do i go for a complete head off and skim/test and the replace the water pump and chains and cros my fingers and hope it is all good.
thanks to all of you in your previous help suggestion. it's good to know that there are people out there that have better knowledge than the dealers (not hard) and treat people as individuals and not just a blank cheque book,
cheers,
