My Engine has Died

I have a 2.2 SRI Vectra 2001, and up till last week was impressed with the way the car ran. When I bought it I had a family friend replace the chain, tensioners and oil valve and thought I would have some trouble free motoring for a while after that.

Anyway the other day I started the car up to go to work and the EML came on and the car went into limp mode. the RAC came out could not fix it due to the number of fault codes that were flying up so I took it to a garage. It turns out that the piston in cylinder 1 has cracked, displaced the valve seats and guides and is not knackered. Looks like the repair bills will be approaching £1000.

I was wondering
A is this is a common problem,
B THe mechanic has recommended replacing all 4 pistons, is this right,
C Would it possibly be cheaper to replace the engine, and
D if so does anyone know of a 2.2 engine for sale.

For the kind of money its going to cost in parts and labour I'd presonally just get a new engine. If you have that one fixed up there might still be hidden faults or damage that show up later. crank shaft bearings etc? Where abouts inthe country are you?

a brand new engine is about £1500, that's got to be a better route than repairing :roll:

it sounds like the valve seat has come out the head and caused the valve to stick open thus cracking the piston :?

the head will probably be scrap 🙁

Just waiting on the mechanic to tell me the repair costs but if its over a grand not sure if its worth repairing, the car itself is probably only worth £2500 on todays vectra prices, suppose with the GSI bits I have on it and few other bits It might be better to break it. Will have to see

buy a secondhand engine off ebay, use your new chain kit from the dead engine and job done cheers..

The repair bill has been confirmed as £1400 so thats a definite non runner. Just got to decide what the best option is now as I cant seem to get hold of a decent priced second hand engine anywhere.

Does anyone have any idea what the car would be worth as it is?

Its a 2001 SRI hatch, in black 89k, service history, has a few mods like a GSI bumper (not yet fitted) irmy upper and lower grilles, black FK angel eyes, GSI facelift wheels, GSI steering wheel, GSI gearknob, irmy handbrake, coin tray and gear surround, full blue led dash and switches, magnex twin slash back box and remus centre section, then the usual heated half leather, cruise control and so on.

Just feel its to good a car to break. Any ideas would be welcome

Car sounds great, Illd wait for a while (obviously you need a car) and see what you can find engine wise. Ive just spent over the odds on a bust engine (£1300), but couldn`t do without the car.

i had the same dilemma as you , you have to consider how much its going to cost you to replace the car with something of a similar standard you seem to have spent a few quid on mods for your car also how long are planning to keep the car, if you put a new engine in you know you have a good car , but you will have to keep it a few years to get your moneys worth. you might buy a second hand car again and inherrit another load of problems. you could dump a second hand engine in and sell it on straight away

i went for the new engine had it for 6k now its running absolutely great see thread, there is a link to the co. i bought my engine off i cant recommend them enough i dealt with a chap called jody v helpful. it cost me 1450 for engine and 400 fitting.

Tried megavaux, vauxspares, ace vauxhall and loads more, the only engine I can find is £1400 and I dont want to pay that much.

If I could get £1200 for it as it is I would sell it to be honest. I think I have lined another vehicle up anyway.
