How To "Fitting Cams"

has anyone a FAQ or How To for changing or fitting cams?

it's quite easy, so no one has done a how 2

a quick how2...

remove coilpack
remove cam cover
fit a cam chain locking tool
remove cam pulley bolts
remove the bearing caps

refitting

use some sealant on the outer cam bearing on the inlet cam
do not overtighten the cam bearing caps, they are 10Nm only and will snap !

is this not an engine out job on a vx?
i never thought it would be that easy!

in that case which cams would be best for the 2.4 inlet and a 68 mm throttle body without modifying the head as this seems to be major money.

Just use a broom handle to hold the engine cover fully open on a vx220 😃

What does this do?

I have never attempted a camshaft change before but as it seems so straight forward i am going to give it a go.

I have just watched the video on the dutch site and it seems pretty easy but i cany figure out what the bolt below does and why they remove it before removing the cams. If someone could explain it would be appreciated.

Also, other than the cylinder head cover gasket are their any other consumables required?

that is the timing chain tensioner 🙂

you don't need any gaskets, the cam cover gasket is a rubber seal and can be re-used, you will need new cam sprocket bolts.

if you remove the lower timing chain cover then you will require the oil pump/timing chain cover gasket and a crank pulley bolt.

Out of interest why do you need new cam sprocket bolts

they are stretch bolts, but they really don't get stretched at the torque setting they are tightened too dunno..

I have reused them before, but have replaced them at a later date as they are cheap 🙂

Is there any substitute for that expensive cam locking tool that I'd otherwise use just once ??

Can anyone who has completed this on a vx220 with the clam on tell me how they rotated the engine to TDC?

stage 1 = 85Nm
stage 2 = angle tighten 30 degrees

piper cams = £235 + postage (they require you to supply the cams for reprofiling)

if you remove the lower timing chain cover you can reset the timing by hand, very easy, then no tool required.

with the cam cover off and the wheel arch liner removed, you can turn the crank pulley until the timing marks are at the correct positions, very easy.

Any way to circumvent this procedure ??

Buy a spare set of cams cheap from ebay or the like....send them of to piper,no car off road then,when piper cams are fitted flog ure originol ones on....
