Tools required for chain replacement

Hi all
I'm going to DIY fit the revised chain kit to my 2001 Vec B SRi this weekend. Its done 60k and I only found out about the problem last Friday! Luckily its lasted this long......lets hope it lasts the week......

Not too bothered about the job itself as I run a Robin Hood kit car as well so have rebuilt many engines over the years. Looks like if you are careful and methodical its not too bad, just takes a while I guess. None of us have fitted a z22SE in a Robin Hood yet, there are a few VX redtops around though.

Couple of Q's on the job:

Looking at the engine mount to be removed on the car, looks like I need a Torx socket set and possibly a Torx spanner to get the mount off the engine? (doesn't look like I'll get a socket in there).

Also, do you need to remove the top of the Catalyst pipe from the manifold or is there enough in the flexible joint for the movement you need to make to the engine during this change? Just had a new CAT so don't want to knacker it!!

you need a torx socket set, a 24mm spanner and a torque wrench + the usual sockets & spanners

if you jack the engine up a socket will fit the 3 engine mount bolts, one is hidden underneath

then if you lower the engine right down, the long water pump bolt should just slide out :roll:

if it won't come out remove the chain cover with the bolt still in place 🙂

you can either loosen the exhaust - 3 bolts so not hard, or leave it in place dunno..

first job to do is loosen the crank pulley bolt, get someone to put the car into fifth gear and press the brake pedal, then try undoing the bolt with a long bar - it's very very tight :?

i'm surprised the z22se hasn't been used in a kit car in the uk, they are the engine of choice for them in the states, probably because they're all alloy dunno..

with a few minor tweaks they can be a powerful engine 😃

Sorry if this is a bit off topic but I think the main reason for not fitting in kits is availability of suitable bellhousings to bolt to a Ford type 9 gearbox and associated engine mounts, engine may also be a little tall to fit as well.
My kits got a Ford zetec engine in (which bolts straight on to a rear drive 'box) but I think the z22SE is a fantastic engine and I'd love to get hold of one, fit throttle bodies, an aftermarket ECU and try and get it to work. Must be loads of potential as well.
Someone will do it one day, its only a matter of time!
Cheers for the helpful reply on the chain issue. I'll get that hurdle over with before I try and fit one into the kit!

of course the bell housing will be different for the z22se, the starter motor is the other side :roll:

the exhaust would be on the driverside too 🙂
