chain replaced, rattle came back

Ijust had the timing chain kit, and also the balance shaft chain kit replaced.

I changed the oil immediatly after , and less than 1000kms after, Im hearing the same rattle sound when I start the engine. I can definitely tell it is the chain. The sound only lasts for less than 1 second.

Im guessing there is a problem with the chain tensioner. Is the tensioner supposed to remain charged with oil? is it possible that something else causes the oil to escape and the it takes a while for the tensioner to fill again?

the sound gets worst if i park the car nose down which makes sense since the tensioner would be inclined down? is this right?

any suggestions to find the problem?

it might be the hydraulic lifters, I had to replace mine because they rattled on cold start up 🙁

I doubt it would be the tensioner, but that is the only item in the chain which uses oil pressure dunno..

i had mine done and if i drive the car for a really short journey it makes it the next morning, i've been told that this might be to condensation in the engine becuase when it goes for a journey of say 20-30 mins it doesnt make it in the morning. also they said its not the chain it possibly the hydraulics or valves sticking

Sometimes I also get the sound from the hydraulic lifters, but I think I can hear the difference between the two sounds. The lifters sound is like a higher frequency, compared to the chain which sounds like a diesel engine.

I'm thinking to send it back to where the chain was replaced, just to check, but is it possible to verify that the tensioner is working properly? Should I venture to remove the tensioner myself?

I guess it's not easy to verify that the tensioner is in good condition, is it?
would it be possible that the new tensioner was damaged?

take it back, don't try and remove the tensioner as they are sprung loaded :roll:

it could be the tensioner or the hydraulic lifters, the garage should be able to tell

if it's the hydraulic lifters, don't worry too much, they can last quite a while.

Hi vocky can you explain exactly what hydraulic lifters are? notsure.gif

Is it the valve stem assembly comprising valve, spring, oil seals, collets or is it something different like the pad between the end of the valve and cam lobe and why do they empty of oil? notsure.gif

mine stopped after replacing the hydraulic lifters, not cheap at £10 EACH + fitting

£20 each at the dealer = £320 + fitting :shock:

The hydraulic lifter sits under the rocker arm, it adjusts the rocker arm to the cam lobe 🙂

they are very small on the z22se, about 12mm diameter dunno..

Do you mean the hydraulic lifters sound? or the timing chain sound?

I'll get the car back and see If they find the problem.

well I get just the same sound for under a second.

I had planned to take the car back tomorrow. and for the last 2 days I've been careful not to park it nose down, and I didn't get the sound anymore.

Just today early in the morning I could hear the hydraulic lifters.

I'm concerned about the chain guide getting damaged with the vibration. I just paid about 380pounds to get both chains fixed, and it would not be nice to damage the new parts.

Can anyone explain why the hydraulic lifters get noisy after after camshafts have been removed for chain replacement? notsure.gif

don't know, mine became noisy after getting the cams reprofiled notsure.gif

the cure was to replace the lot and they ain't cheap 🙁
