I had an S reg GTI turbo before I bought my vauxhall and .. well this happened to it;
A 'lady' drove out in front of me while I was doing 60mph, don't worry though, I got revenge on her car on impact (it's tilting as it only has three wheels left);
With the insurance money I bought a 2.2 and regret that day as since I've owned the car its cost me more than its worth.
GTI Turbo's are AWESOME cars, only common problem would be a sensor that sorts out the idling and the electric windows. My window screwed up but it was easy enough to fix. The petrol will be a bit more than the 2.2 but you kind of expect that.
Overall - it's german, it's built like it should last!
EDIT - Lambda sensor was the sensors name i think!!
