RESTORING FADEING REDS!!!

it seems to be after so many years red cars tend to fade and more so on the plastic parts such as the bumpers. has this faded right through or could it be restored with t-cut ect. ive tried coloured polish in the past and no luck. any recomendations??? showo..

you could try Autoglym SRP applied by hand or if you know someone with a machine polisher perhaps they could polish it for you.

Got the same problem all the plastics look crap, getting a machine next week. But never used one before is it worth getting a cutting compund for it?

I had this problem on my old car (Escort 1988) I used t-cut, looked lovely, polished it often and it never looked 19 years old !!

Only problem seems to be, once you have t-cuted the car, you have to maintain it by regular polishes, otherwise it ssems to fade very quickly !?!?

I thought all these reds fading had stopped now. I remember back in the late 80's and mid 90's all these Vauxhall and Fords going round with faded paint. The dark blues were a problem too because they used the same pigments from red to make blue.

I'm just a little suprised that things haven't moved on by now.

There still doing it on the Vec C. Is it still the case that a solid colour doesnt have a clear coat on hence the paint weathers more.

Is it just me, or are vauxhalls the most common faded red car ? I see loads where I am !!!
Come to think about it, red isnt that popular for vauxhalls ???

Mines isn't faded on the metal, infact looks nice expect the swirls. It's the bumpers that are faded, infact all the plastics. Getting a PC next week, whats the best stuff I can use on it to make it look reder?

A respray!!! Only use a two-pack paint!!

Lol thanks, getting it in for a re-spray after the new year nothing will bring them back up unfortunatly. 🙁

2 pack paint contains cyanide doesn't it?

Yes John it doe's. nasty stuff, you really need to use full face masks with that stuff. just as a bit of knowledge for people if they didnt know, most modern day car paints are C.O.B ( CLEAR OVER BASE). So you dont get the problem with fading anymore. it is usually the same type of clear coat that is used on any metalic/pearl colour. it is sprayed over a matt basecoat colour ie, the base colour red/blue etc etc.
to cap it off to comply with curent legislation bodyshops have to now use waterbase paints... which is a bit of a silly statment me thinks cos the basecoat is the only waterbased part! the clearcoat is'nt. and of course it is all a step in the right direction for the enviroment. every little helps.

bumber fade

faded bumbers is a big problem there are lots of products i have tried over the years all av there draw backs auto glym bumper gel tends to leave streaks down your paint work after the rain.
the only half decent way i have found is heat the bumper up with a heat gun that brings back some ov the colour then whilst still warm aply a bumper black it does work but it is a bit hard to get rite and i have knacked a few bumpers up getin it rite lol 😃

using a polisher is good but watch out when you do the edges as it is very easy to burn through the paint. and is also a good idea to masking tape off any plastic as the buffer tends to burn the plastic texture off if not carefull

I've read about heating up black bumper trims and using gel on them too.

I heard about that as well, when I was looking to get a Corsa a few years back, as the bumpers on them are a nightmare for colour fade.

Same prob here with red Astra ........ I used some McGuires polish 2 coats and she came up a treat. Thing is you just gotta be on top of it every cpl of weeks or respray for showroom effect i reckon !! 🙁

As you say maintaince polishing & waxing is key with reds esp Vauxhall Reds. A respray is a bit drastic though a quick blast with a PC / Rotary should get an oxidised red back to it's full glory and a quite a few hours hard graft.

Will try to get some pics up when I get some decent light, I think they are that bad they will need sprayed.

All the plastics are pinkish but the metal looks nice and red, really makes the car look crap.
