Do you regret buying a 2.2.....

...and not a turbo? There are a lot of people on here that have spent thousands on there cars, modyfing, making them look nice ect. I myself have spent a fair bit since owning my 2.2, but am now considering buying a turbo, because i feel i have gone as far as i can with my astra (Without it getting really expensive).
An Sri turbo is only 2 insurance groups up from the 2.2, plus they are good for 30 - 32 mpg, and you can now pick them up for around 5500 - 6000 for a mint one. At 190bhp standard, doesn't it make more sense to sell up and buy the turbo equivelant? Don't get me wrong i love my 2.2, its the most realiable car i have owned, but there is this nagging thought at the back of my head that i should have saved a little more and gone for the turbo. Maybe i just need some rearsurance from my fellow 2.2 friends! shrug..

when I bought my 2.2 sri it was quite quick, but then every new car seems to get quicker :roll:

as a standard 2.2 they are now quite slow 🙁

but with a few tweaks they can be made quicker 😃

2.4 inlet manifold, piper cams, 4-1 exhaust manifold and a decent exhaust and panel filter and then it will match the sri turbo's 190 bhp 8)

saying that I owned a sri Turbo and it was great fun, but then so is a 200+ bhp 2.2 :lol:

Forget about figures and what not, think about driveability, thats were its at with the 2.2. No matter what gear, rev or whatever its always pretty much on song 95% of the time.

Yeah im not a massive turbo fan.

there was a guy that had a 2.2 and al he did was de-restrict the air box with panel filter then put a cat back system on with cams and he said he kept up with the gsi turbo 200bhp. ok you can mod the turbo to about 250 bhp cheaply but on a fwd thats around the limit the front can really take with out serious modding. i bet if you did a vocky build engine it will give the turbo version a hell of a run. its not all about bhp its about flow aswell

I have to agree, when i 1st bought mine i was amazed at the pulling power, and still am...i like the fact you can go around a roundabout in 3rd quite comfortably :lol:.
I did at one point consider a move to the coupe turbo, but i dont think the added expense and then all the cash modding it (after the dosh ive already spent on mine) was worth it. So ive decided to wait until the VXR's have dropped to about 12k, then i will change, as 300bhp is easily achievable at not much cash.

Did for a little while :? The vxt has some very impressive numbers, 250bhp easily, 4.7 0-60 times then I had a go in one. The car just wasnt as balanced as the N/a, lots more body roll and an almost on/off switch throttle. Quite happy ive stayed with the 2.2 and would be confident of holding my own against any Vxt on road or track cheers..

I love my car and the fact it is a 2.2, its a shame that even with a SC it wont much past 240bhp, but it drives soo much better than a turbo, ok the pull when flooring isnt as good, but at least i know ive made it do 200+ bhp by myself using normal mods, not just a remap, and i love playing with the engine and learning about it, and it should be quicker than a standard turbo.

Simple answer.....Yes.
In an astra or even a vec b I could see that the 2.2 would be a very capable lump, but in the lardy arsed vec c it lacks a bit. Don't get me wrong, it still pulls well and on the motorway it can hit 135+, so Ive been told wink wink. For me, I should have got the Edition 100 2.0T, the standard 2.0T sri wasn't about till a year later. Although the saab derived vec c 2.0T only develops 175bhp its still better than the 144ish I have now. To throw another one in the equation and tbh the best of them all would be the 1.9 CDTI 16v. A very torquey lump and cheep to get to the 200bhp mark, and it kills the 2.2 for mpg, 40+ beat 26 mpg (all town) no matter what way you look at it. If you guys move one to the new astra its deffo another option to seriously consider.

i think the 2.2 is great apart from the horrid flat spot it has which annoys me all the time!!!! hopefully the 2.4 manifold will get rid of this !?? but yes 2.2 all the way the potential it has is mint and its so smooth!! 8)
