Automatic to Manual

Just a query for now, but is it possible to change and automatic 2.2 astra convertible with a 2.2 manual gear box? notsure.gif

If so how hard would this be cause im guessing the car is alrady going to have holes and mounts for the extra pedal and linkage?

Also what parts would a require to do a full conversion?

I converted an auto to manual a few years ago, you will need driveshafts, gearbox, gear linkage, gearbox mounts, flywheel, clutch, pedal box, clutch pipework

easiest way is to buy it all together from the breakers, should be cheaper that way too dunno..

When you did it, do you remember it being a relitively easy job? How long did it take you? Also did you remove the whole engine to work?

There aren't any guide around are there?

I converted a 1.8 auto astra to a 5 speed manual, but the principle is the same.

wasn't really hard, just time consuming dunno..

also the auto gear selector inhibitor will need wiring out, which is just a couple of wires 🙂

I'll going to try and source out a manual gearbox, etc now

I want mine to be manual as I love it too much to sell it and buy another car (time and money, be about the same hassle as fitting a new transmission!)

if you do undertake this task don't forget to take photos and write a "how to" so that others could do this if they wanted, would be something special for this forum too :-)

hi dodger, I will give that ago, the lucky thing is a only live 15 minute walk (2 minute drive) from work so if things too longer then expected I can leave the car off the road 🙂

Just need to source the parts out now, going to try my local breakers but failing them does anyone have any ideas of online breakers? And what I would be loking to pay?

I have a flywheel you can collect for free or just pay the postage dunno..

Does anyone have a rough estimate of how much all the parts I need will cost?

I got a quick quote from an online break and just for the gearbox and driveshafts is going to be about £450.00, I'm hoping i can source them cheaper

I have everything apart from a clutch pedal, also have a clutch plate witch only done about 2000 miles before bottom end went... if your going ahead and need bits let me know.

What exactly is the clutch pipework? and does anyone happen to know the part numbers for the pedal box, gear linkage and clutch pipework?

clutch pipework is the pipe between the pedal and the gearbox, probably a tenner from the scrappy 🙂

I think I've sourced everything out, just to check:

Both Driveshafts,
z22se f23 gearbox,
Flywheel, clutch, etc,
Gear Linkage (inside car and engine),
Clutch Pipework,
Clutch and Brake pedal (they're seperate apparently).

Is this everything? 🙂

Also will I be able to do this without removeing the dash and engine? dunno..

not sure on access to the pedal box, I usually pop to the breakers and have a look at a stripped car 🙂

should be able to leave engine in place, but might be an idea to hire an engine cradle - it fits across the inner wings and supports the engine when the subframe is dropped cheers..

Well after speaking speaking to my mechanic friend (who spent many years working for Vauxhall - I should have consulted earlier), he has told me it is possible to do what I want but he has advised me it'll be better to sell my car and buy a manual - as it will de-value my car :shock: , and also he said it would be a pain with getting the right ECU's as they are different and the cost could just keep rising to get it working again. :cry:

I guess its back to the drawing board for little cheap mods or time to start thinking of selling dunno..
