Tapping at higher revs, lots of excess oil...

I'm hoping it goes well... I think I can forget about cheap now! I think I have been sold a duffer, damn private sale... And I'm so annoyed at myself for not having an inspection... If you are thinking of buying, learn from my mistake...

1st problem, corrusion around the flange joint between the mid-section and back box of the exhaust causing it to fall off! My mechanic engineered a new joint for me on this occasion

Thinking back... the first thing I did when I picked up the car was check the oil, it was low at that point aswell... Why oh why didn't I catch on earlier!?!?!

Now this... Not having much luck so far! :?

I presume the inspection will mostly be where they hook it up to the tech2 computer and get readouts? It is going into Perry in Bury, anyone had any good/bad experiences with them?

not really, depends what they find when they check them dunno..

typically the bearings are about £100 if the crank is ok, fitting is a few hours labour, just a case of dropping the sump.

VX report:

Knocking is coming from the bottom of the engine, there are also oil leaks.

2 options:

1 - They strip down the engine, find the fault, fix, hope nothing else goes wrong...

2 - Replace the engine... (recommended option)

Engine - £1418+VAT
Gasket Set (if required) - £100+VAT
Labour - £756+VAT

£2671.95 Inc VAT...

Thru my bosses contacts I have an appointment with a ferrari engineer (who was trained up on vx) on Saturday morning, only problem is to get there is a 60 mile round trip... I'm really concerned that the car is just not up to it!!

The tapping now occurs when it is idle aswell, it also seems a lot more timed than it previously was and not just at higher revs...

My boss (he seems to know what he is talking about, but I can't guarantee it! I work in IT so know how much damage a little knowledge can do!!) has had a good ol' listen and he thinks it is more to do with the inlet / outlet valves?! Is there anything I can do to check such a thing?

I'm listening to any advice I can get at the moment, tho with that is attached a fear that the person dishing out the advice doesn't know for sure!

I will also discuss getting the big end bearings replaced with my mechanic

Is it possible that its the hydraulic lifters are buggered?

dunno.. But I will add it to my list of possible's!

But hopefully the third mechanic I am visiting tomorrow can pin it down more! It's not that I don't trust what I have been told so far, the problem with my usual mechanic is he won't be able to do anything till the end of september at least... I could really do with it back sooner...

Tomorrow AM we are hooking the engine up to some listening device to narrow down for sure where this damn knocking/ticking is!?!? Also performing a compression test to track if and where the oil is leaking from...

That listening device is probably what a Doctor would use to listen to your chest!! That used to be the old fashioned way of listening to engine noises.

there are a couple of things for certain in a z22se engines life :?

1 - the small oil jet will block 🙁

2 - low oil level causes the big end bearings to go 🙁

DO NOT DRIVE IT 60 MILES, the big end WILL go through the block and the engine will be scrap :shock:

Right well the 3rd mechanic to look at it today has said for certain that it is the big end (well done vocky!), but also raised serious concerns about other parts of the engine because it was starved of oil, he recommended swapping the engine again...

I have resided to just bite the bullet and get it done now, spoke to vx a bit more because they will offer me a 12 month (parts and labour) warranty (which I felt was not to be sniffed at...), doing it thru a local mechanic the best I can expect is a 3 month warranty on the engine only... I have bartered with the service manager at Perry's a little and near enough halved the labour costs, I can have it back on the road by next Friday hopefully!

Just need to work out how to raise the finances over the weekend! :roll:

Oh, and what is a "VX Pro engine" really?

The service manager said it was pretty much a brand new engine...

pretty much so, built to original spec, worth every penny 🙂

plus it will last 100,000+ miles, but do keep an eye on the oil level - the z22se does like to drink the stuff :roll:

to be honest the conrods could be stretched anyway, this is what happens after the bearings go, then the conrods snap 🙁

look after it, run it in for 500 miles and then change the oil + filter cheers..
