RE: Oil Leak

I need help, quick. I posted on here about my car losing oil thinking it was crank seal, but I got the service history through from the previous owner and the seal was changed 15,000 miles ago by Vauxhall.

The left hand upper side of the block (where the alternator, etc) is plastered in oil and I've put half a litre in over 300 miles. Is there a gasket between the timing chain cover and block?? dunno..

Has anyone else had this problem, the car has a full service history at Vauxhall, so is it worth trying them 1st as they were the last ones to have it in pieces??

Any ideas or thoughts gratefully appriecated.

Hello mate, sorry for the delay on this one.

Yes there is a gasket between the timing cover and the block. Its very delicate. Its an aluminium/rubber gasket. If the gasket gets bent during fitting it will easily cause a leak. I would wonder if the gasket was even replaced when the crank seal was done. My guess is that it wasn't.

there is a gasket for the lower timingchain/oil pump and the crank pulley seal.

get both replaced cheers..

the cover has to come off to replace the gasket, so the oil seal will take two minutes extra and only costs £5 🙂

Thanks for that. Do you think its wise to change the chain and nozzle, while its in bits, as theres no history of it been done, the cars done 113,000 miles??

Definately get it done mate. Once the timing chain cover is off you're ready to do the chain anyway. And don't forget a new crank seal again.

What sort of money are you looking at for a new cam chain, and where is the best place to get one from, I've read a few threads that say that it was modified in 2002?? Is this correct??

genuine part only, might be worth getting Benny to do the work for you dunno..

much cheaper and done by a vx mechanic, he's up wolverhampton area 🙂

otherwise it will cost about £500 at a dealer :roll:
