How do I find out if my car is fitted with a pre cat?

Hi everyone! I just read in another thread that:

My astra coupe is a 2003 and I wanna know if i got a pre cat or not, but how can i know this without removing the down pipe and acutally look if there is one? 🙂

x-ray goggles? I don't think there is a definite way other than to take the pipe off. It's not that hard to do on an Astra, just undo 3 bolts, let the pipe hang down a bit. You should be able to shove your finger in and feel for the top of the pre-cat.

hmm maybe i can "knock" a little on the down pipe and listen if it sounds hollow or something? notsure.gif

Jack the car up, crawl under and undo the three hex head nuts from manifold.
Undo the cat back exhaust. May need to disconnect the two sensors.
Pull it away and have a butchers at the three holed flange where it meets the manifold.

the flange is the flat piece of metal on the top of the downpipe which the three bolts secure to the cast iron exhaust manifold
