ECU problem

My dad has a Astra 1.4, which seems to hold a rev of aprox 3000rpm. No sure exactly as there is no rev counter. There is no EML even when he turns the ignition on all the lights on dash come on but mot EML.

Took to have a diognostic but the guy says it cant read the ECU any one know what could stop the ECU from being read? Does he need to replace the ECU?

He prob not using the right equipment to read the ecu..
If your gonna have a play yourself check for air leaks etc.
if all ok i would try cleaning the idle valve throttle body egr valve etc before looking at something serious as these bits can easily be cleaned to try and elimate a problem.

Idle control valve was always a pain in the ass on the older cars. Usually the Cavalier was a favourite. Take it off, give it a damn good clean with carb cleaner. See if that works. If not, try and get another one thru' a breakers. Brandnew ones cost a absolute packet!!

He is using right equipment as this is the fella I took my vectra to a few weeks ago. He is known as one of the best in the area. Can see what your saying thou with the idle control valve and egr valve, but dont understand why he isnt getting a reading notsure.gif

not sure of engine code, its a 1.4 8v. 1998 R reg.

I would clean up the throttle body and the idle valve

It seems that noting is connected as when you plug in the diog nothing happens it dont pick up any recognition that its connected to the car, but there is power goin to it????
